how can think positive at Gallaudet if people would be nice to us?

I don't think it's about schools. I think it's about Gallaudet. Did you realize that there are situations in Gallaudet that are getting out of hands? I heard they had to replace the football field cause it was damaged by the football team. HELLO, THE DEAF PREZ.

Football field need to re-seed annually. What do you expect? Grass will die for any sport, that why we need to maintain grass by adding more seeds and continue to nurse it back to health. That is common for all sports.

High school do same thing, same with parks in suburbans. Its a common thing. Its normal procedure to replace add grass etc... I dont see this as negative thing.

Artificial grass is a totally different. Very hard to destroy an Artificial grass, NFL and Div 1 colleges or big high school have this type of grass. Its practically made of plastic grass. I have played on all types of grass as artifical grass and muddy football field. Its depend on budget to do it. By the way... Artificial grass is VERY expensive to have. it runs 500,000 to install and replace time to time. Regular grass cost $2,000+ for seed annually. Its cheaper to do re-seeding grass on sport field than installing Artificial grass.

So its common.

It sound like you made decision of one sided point of view when you entered Gallaudet. That is a common problem of many deaf individual. They already made up their mind about specific group before giving 2nd chance. Or perhaps hang out with wrong crowd at Gallaudet. Its common from one university to another. Same trend, just micro level with Gallaudet compared to University of Maryland. Gallaudet has roughly 1,400 enrolled students while Univ of MD has 20,000 enrolled students. % is what you need to look at. You will be surprised that % is pretty consistent from micro level to macro level.

I agree with u. One has to enter Gallaudet with an open mind and expect to encounter people who arent nice but eventually, those who are really nice and worthy of our friendship will come around. I was encountered with Deaf militants who didnt accept me cuz I didnt grow up culturally deaf but I told them off and just continued with my studies. Eventually, I met many wonderful people whom I still keep in touch to this day. I also felt I was academically challenged at Gallaudet just like I was at Arizona State U. :dunno: what's up with some people who felt they got poor quality education there...maybe it depends on the instructor?

Yes, I only showed one side of my perspective. You are right, Deaf Mortgage, comparing to another schools, Gallaudet has one of the smallest enrollments in USA. It is true that several of people has been influence by others who heard or visited Gallaudet.

When I visited Gallaudet for the first time, it was an awesome place for me to be at. I was only thirteen at that time and the deaf world was still unknown to me.

The second chance you are talking to me about is not going to happen. Because I benefit nothing when I was living there. I felt like I was teaching at Gallaudet about things they never knew about. But then I ended up learning about the deaf world rather than teaching them about the world I lived in.

Well, my other perspective of Gallaudet is that my experience was great. I explored the side of myself where I was really myself, no family or friends to look up to me as a role model. I guess that's the only thing I can say good about Gallaudet is that it's a great experience because I have never been in a deaf institute in my life until I became a student of Gallaudet.

The football field; so they do seed every year. I gotcha. But I also heard that the field at Gallaudet is a turf. So fake grass. But I'm curious, is it more harmful or the same?

The only reason why people aren't nice. Because there are specific groups of people that stays together through everything. Most colleges I've attended aren't like that. They all mix as if they were people among people. Nothing that made them feel different from each other because they are all students of the same college. Gallaudet isn't really like that, it's an institute where one can get in easily and leave easily.

Shel- yes, it does depends on the teachers, but then who hired the teachers? Also, it does depend on the high school you attended. Mine; I attended a high school where I graduated as one of the first deaf students, there were only 2 deaf students there in that high school at the time, of its thirty years. That school had very strict education plan. Also, not many college I've attended knows Gallaudet University even tho it's one hundred or more years old. I was a bit embrassed about it.

Did you every experience being embrassed or feeling embrassed for going to Gallaudet in the past when you're attending another college?

I said a bit. But truly, I'm not.

My biggest benefit from Gallaudet is to explore my identity. I came to Gallaudet for football program and socially. However, I took advantage of system of education and socially. I needed the 4 years to develop a true identity. My inner identity finally exploded 3rd year at Gallaudet and from there I took off deeper into deaf community and will never back down.

If i recall correctly, there are three types of football field.

Natural grass - easy to destroy if rained. A game to remember if muddy. Fun to play on during rain but hell of job to play.

Astro turf - its perfect flat but no cushion. It like playing on carpet. Painful burns if skid.

Artificial grass - look like a perfect brand new grass but has sand below plastic grass. Soft and does not hurt when you fall down. Hard on ankles.

I majored as Recreation: Leadership & Programming at Gallaudet. So I know a lot about Park and how it works. FYI Recreation program is top 300 in USA and accredited. Right now I am not doing my major but I do look forward in 10 years I will enter camping world again. I am soon to be a father of unborn child in matter of few days to two weeks. So I am focus on supporting family, dream later.

2nd chance is a key to life. If you dont give people 2nd chance, means you do not forgive people. I have gone through hell and back at Gallaudet. I forgave them. I have given them hell but they forgave me. We all move on.

Its part of personal growth to have enemies and friendship. Also to have classmates and teachers for life time. That something we cannot buy but to cherish it every moment of it. Once I was done with 4 years run at Gallaudet, it was awesome experience in end. Now that chapter is closed and real world is open. Totally different realm approach. I am currently entering 4th year since I graduated and saw a lot personal growth. A lot alumni have seen each other growing up. What happens at Gallaudet, basically stay there.

One of employee told me this "be nice to everyone, never know they will be your boss some day."

I took it to my heart every day as I work.

I graduated from Arizona State University before attending Gallaudet.

U are entitled to your opinions..Gallaudet is not for everyone, I guess.

If Gallaudet was so bad, then how did my friend who got his BA degree from there get accepted to John Hopkins University for his MBA in Medical Administration and graduate with honors?

I couldnt agree with you more on that one.

It's all about fitting into right peers which fit you or someone at Gallaudet (even same thing at other colleges)... that's pretty much an issue for everyone there.

A tip: Be yourself and stay with good (right) peers then you will be fine there.

It's usually the ambition acquired out of yourself at Gallaudet that the general expects out of you, too... that's their norm; like it or not. I assume that it still does the same nowadays, too. I even thanked them for developing my ambition even more than before I enrolled there otherwise... it boosted my confidence so it did to my Gally friends that I was told as well.

There is a real possibility (common maybe) that it does quite harder for some mainstream or oralist students to accept this kind of norm because those ones weren't accustomed to challenge himself or herself to this kind of norm. Only few did accept and did well after but some didn't in my time back then. Also by now I was told that there is 50% mainstream and 50% deaf school graduates enrolling at Gally in last several years and still so I wonder what the norm is exacting as of now. So it may be the reasons why some mainstream graduates ended up frustrated by not accepting to challenge himself/herself there.

I am mainstream deaf student. I grew up mainstream in Missouri and California. Not by choice, I was relocated to California and had to make a decision. Sink or swim. I just mingled with hearing crowd until I graduated. I was so glad to go to Gallaudet because tired of faking my personality to everyone. Gallaudet gave me room to grow and develop true identity.

Yes more mainstream are now attending Gallaudet. Residential deaf school are sending less students to Gallaudet. Mainly because of VR not budget wise and history of previous students ruined. California used to give full ride to Gallaudet, and many abused it. So California VR cut budget to tutuion only. I have to pay the prices of older generation. I had to work, I had to study harder, and I had to do everything to stay afloat. Here I am now.

You went thru several schools to reach your goal. Now, you work at a bank. Are you owner of the bank? Vice-president? Clerk?

I am mortgage banker in USA. I do home loans. Refinance, purchase, cash out refinance, you name it. That my job. Not owner of a bank. Not vice-president. Just ASL Mortgage banker.

Several school? Only one university. That it. 4 years degree.

Oh, I see. I thought that you could be a top line of the company. Is your president deaf?

Oh, I see. I thought that you could be a top line of the company. Is your president deaf?

President of First American Bank is hearing. He had deaf uncle and aunt. Not fluent in ASL. In fact, nobody in the bank is fluent in ASL.

However - Deaf Service Division has 5 employees. Jason and Luke are Coda. Mark, Sonny and I are deaf. We are only 5 employees that are fluent in ASL. Jason is our team leader of Deaf Service Division.
