How can I rid of Gnats in my house???

In South Carolina we don't need any more humidity in the house. We don't want to breed mold.

I'm afraid heat and steam would just cause the Palmetto bugs (roaches) to lounge and say, "ahhhhh." They would feel like they were in a spa.

I heard about Palmetto bugs, but I thought they were just in Florida.

I am forever a Northerner now!

South Carolina is called the Palmetto State, so the Palmetto bugs belong to us.

Palmetto tree is also the state tree, and the emblem on the state flag.

Iowa = North?

I prefer to be elevated though... 9000+ feet does the trick.

I used to live in El Paso, and that is in the mountains. It is bad for my health.

But Iowa is far enough North not many bugs survive.

Now you exposed another huge gap in my knowledge. :aw:

I only know about Palmetto bugs at all because my brother-in-law took his family to Florida to vacation.

Some of our bugs do stray over the border. :giggle:

I like it. It's organic.

However, I wonder about the paint on the walls....

Painted wall just fine they don't melt down or flaked.

Rats hates heats it's escaped to somewhere hide in normal temperture place. Soon my landlord would order different pest control company for kill a rats, they would insert the probes into the wall and release the poison gas to kill the rats. Make sure patch up the holes after the probes are done..

In state of minnesota they banned poison chemical spray for rooms, instead they use heat steamer machines or probes into wall. Due to very dangerous to kids and animals or cancer.

gnat seem to be attracted to vinegar. Don't use it especially apple cider type. I think you are drawing more in because of vinegar.

But it is the fruits you leave out.. try put them in the fridge (or stop buying them for while...buy the ones that can tolerate fridge)

I used to have gnat problems as well, and this is what I did. I put all the fruits and veggie away, don't use vinegar, and kept all my dishes clean. I also made sure there is no rotten milk spill anywhere and such and they are gone now.

btw, is your potting soil organic? if so, I guess that would be like leaving fruits around.

Yikes!! I've heard that gnats are hard to kill. But, I want to ask you a question, does your plant have standing water? If so, get rid of it. You need to buy those Azua globes. It waters the plant for you, and leaves no standing water at the bottom of your plant. All you have to do is fill the water up in the glass globe, turn it upside down and press it in all the way down to the bottom of your plant, then it'll do the rest for you.

I agree, let your plant dry out alittle before watering them again. Those eggs probably love the moist.

Beside some plants don't like "wet feet" all the time (meaning don't keep watering them... let the soil dry out before watering them again)

Yep, they like the vinegar and drown in it. poor bugs... pickled....

gnats won't leave

Control them as best you can indoors -- I use a flying insect spray -- and wait until the cold weather which will kill them outdoors. Then open your windows to kill the ones still alive in your dwelling. Use the spray as an adjunct to the cold. This time of year, the warmth of your dwelling is a lifesaver for them. The ones you kill are replaced by live ones which seem to know that their fellows have invaded your dwelling.

I believe that gnats have a life span of only a few weeks and if true, time will take care of them even if you do nothing.
