I had a power outrage here in Norway, LOL
some mudslides in central Norway..

My server was offline and the internet ISP down all night until lunch today! It's funny how this area was affected at about the same time USA/Canada had their electricity bust.

But we had fun and romantic moments.. until the lights came back on! drat! Soft candles, with the kittens mewing out of confusion lala!

Aww, geez...and I thought you were based somewhere on the East Coast... Well, at least you're OK and nothing major happened. As for NY, I just hope that they find out the source of why they experienced the blackout and the extent of it.

I bet you 9 months from now, Hospitals in teh affected areas will see a sharp rise in the number of births. LOL. Power Outage Babies. LOL.

 Oh oh Matty.. never thought of that!! :gossip: Pregnant mommies gossiping about their due dates.. "My my my.. we all conceived on the same date... the power outage night!!!" That would bring back memories of the Quebec's power outage.. I wonder if there were babies conceived around that time!!

Hey guys!

It's 4am here (12 hours after blackout started) and the power came ALIVE!!! It's ALIVE!!!

What happened to me today:
I was at work when the blackout occured. My Co-workers were very nervous when they realized that none of phones, internet, cell phones and radio (in the beginning) were not working at all. We needed these so badly to keep in touch with the businesses and our clients. We knew it was something serious than minor blackout. So, luckily I found out that my pager was working and paged just about everyone. One of my friend has sidekick and it amazingly worked! So she could see on CNN.com, it wasn't informative at that time when everyone was trying to find out what was going on.Then we went outside and went to one of co-worker's car and listened to the radio. We decided to leave early and drove CAREFULLY to home, there was no street lights, all of emergency services were shutted down. I was stuck on highway for at least an hour w/o AC on so I could save up the gas just in case if I stuck there longer than expect.
So far, there was no accidents nor I've heard anything serious. Thank god for that!
Other thing I was glad about the blackout because we always had a lot of lights here in NY and on Long Island, so tonight I got to see ALOT of stars and a couple of shooting stars! Hehe
It's so good to be back here! :thumb:

glad u got home and got to get the rare glimpse of the stars!!!! :thumb: i know its so rare to see the stars up there while in NY with all those lights

(ahem)

It is a BIG deal. The problem here is, if the power go out. Some people are at risk, especially the handicapped ones, and people who are on oxygen/dialyses machines at their homes.

Just don't take everything for granted.

This isn't exactly a normal technical problem. In fact, it's one of the biggest blackout ever in history. The last one that was as big as this one was back in 1965.

That's almost 40 years.

Imagine that!

Sorry, but it's a big deal when something like this happen. It may even cost businesses in millions.

ONCE WE GET A POWER BLACKOUT LIKE THE RECENT ONE, WE WON'T BE ABLE TO

  • use the Internet
  • get any lights except for the one that operate on batteries, but how can you buy batteries if stores are unable to use the cash register machines?
  • No A/C, especially when we're in a heat wave putting us at risk of dying. France just announced that they fear that 3,000 and more are dead from the heat wave.
  • No fans, except for the ones that operate on batteries, but again, you can't buy them while in a blackout.
  • use the bank machines, and that include online banking.
  • Meat will have to be thrown away after a half hour or more.
  • A lot of food in the fridge will go bad
  • We won't be able to make ice cubes
  • Water pumps go out of service meaning we can't shower, drink, and more!

There's a lot more to list, anybody else?

Yes, it's just another friggin' blackout, people in India and other parts of the world get that on a regular basis, so what's the big deal!? Well, I'd like to tell you all where I was when the blackout occurred.

As usual, I was in my office working with QuarkXPress, making some last minute changes for the HearMore catalog when all of a sudden the lights started flickering and making weird sounds. I looked up thinking "WTF, I need better lights around here", then everything just went dark. It was 4:14 PM I remembered, then I walked out of the room and people were scattering about asking questions.

After an hour of waiting for the power to go back on and getting no real answers to the cause of the blackout, the manager told most employees to go home, including me. On the way home, I realized all traffic lights were off, cars were everywhere. That's just great -- it's rush hour! On the way home I tuned on 1010 Wins, an AM radio station, and learned the following (old news by now):

-There was an overload in the grid system somewhere
-Mayor Bloomberg of NY told everyone to stay calm
-People in NYC are walking home since all subways are closed
-NYC's power is off in its entirity (The City has finally slept!)
-It was humid and hot outside, drink lots of water and open windows
-There were hundreds, if not thousands, of cops on the streets of NYC
-et al

Driving to my destination took a while, and I had to drive carefully through intersections. When I got home, I was bored as hell since I couldn't use my computer, watch TV or use anything that requires electricity for that matter. However, on the good side, I did get to watch the pretty stars in the sky. I though to myself "When was the last time I looked up and saw a shooting star?" It seemed like forever.

I went to bed early that night and woke up late for work in the morning. Hey, blame it on the "Great Blackout", my vibrating clock was dead! ;)

Hee, that was pretty much one of the very few bright sides to having a blackout in the entire city.

True, it does feel like forever since I last saw a shooting star. Simply a beautiful thing to see.

i have more...
-airport shutdown
-security shutdown ( which terriost can come to attack without alert)
- boredom, no t.v. etc..
-looting could happen since there's no phone to call 911, and alarm in stores don't work, etc.. and home alarm won't work.

Banjo -- some ppl who has laptops that has wireless capabilities can indeed get onto the internet LOL

Not always.

The batteries last for what? 5 hours?

You would have to power them up first.

The Internet... wireless capabilities?

True, but it won't work good enough if the satellite signals are spotty. A lot of Cell Phone users had trouble using the cell phones because of spotty signals since they were running on generators which wasn't enough.

Cell Phone users depend on the satellite signals to communicate with the others.

You'll be bound to get static signals and disconnected several times.

Now they're saying that Ohio could had triggered the blackout.

Hi Folks!

I was little affected by the massive power outage because the power outage stayed on for only seven hours. I even managed to get on internet to check with several of my friends.

I felt so blessed to have Blackberry RIM 950 pager to exchange messages with my friends in Ottawa, Kitchener, Toronto, and London to keep us in touch under those circumstances. I even kept passing news to them thru my web services on pager, so they could know what was going on. Without those Blackberry RIM 950, it would be difficult to know what was going on.

Now the investigators pointed to three failed transmission lines in Cleveland as main culprit of the massive blackout. Also they wondered why the FirstEnergy failed to stop cascade of failure from spreading to New York, Michigan, Ontario and affected areas.

KingCobra! HISSS!!!
