Hotel fines guests for bad reviews

Why? Were you planning to visit Hudson, NY, or attend a wedding there?

ha.. lucky the couples to get $$ back. Always check the reviews first, if you learn something that you are not happy, then reply the negative reviews that hurts the busineses.

negative reviews on line from some people doesn't mean it's a bad establishment unless you are actually PLANNING on posting a negative review before you even get there.

I don't always give much weight to Yelp or anywhere else because it is usually top heavy with bad reviews and not enough good reviews and even the good reviews I don't always trust.

(one such example-- the movie Grand Budapest Hotel- all my aunt and I heard /saw were good reviews. We went... We hated it.)

I really feel it's unfair to made the wedding couple pay the fines , they have no ideas their guests where writing bad reviews. I would think this would made people think twice about having their wedding that a hotel does this .

I usually check reviews of places that I'd go into. The higher the ratings after so many reviews.. I ended up satisfied and happy with their service. I stayed at Marriot several times and never had issues, other times I stayed at Best Western, no issues. It depends on how the management in hotel takes care of the place.

I've heard other stories that someone got sued and the company won which a poster had to pay $3000 for a bad review about their company. What they failed to notice the fine print the company posted, so before you post a review, better check the fine print first.

Here is few examples: Can You Be Sued If You Give A Bad Review On Yelp?

I think this is posted somewhere but here it is: Couple Fined $3,500 For Negative Review Fights Back With Lawsuit

But what if the bad review is true, I wanted to give a company a bad review on Yelp but it asked for my facebook info and I do not have a facebook account . I called BBB instead and told them that I will never use a company with a BBB rating again. BBB is a joke .

Some hotels have a good reputation stretch, but if something is amiss, I do it the old fashioned way. I bring it up personally with management to resolve it.

I tried to do that but it did not help the person never called back, I like to do some thing the old fashion way too.

I checked the ratings for different hotels in New Orleans for my husband's 40th birthday...I found one hotel that came with the package that sentence. It did have some good and bad reviews so I took the risk.Ohhhh when we got there, we LOVED it. I gave it 4 stars....one star missing due too fault of their own...too far from the nightlife in New Orleans.

Hehehehe... If I had my own business I'd love to fine people for bad reviews... that'd be great... :laugh2:

Yeah, I saw the last link. The OP's link is interesting, too. If the clause in terms of use includes prohibition of giving a bad review even when it's a truth, it's not acceptable and I think it should be illegal. If a reviewer tells a lie or makes it up, I can see why they sue the reviewer (for defamation) and they must prove it. Yelp warns the reviewers about it and their reviews shall be honest and straightforward, no BS. That's what the customers want to read, right?

Yea, when I read the reviews and see the bad reviews especially those that seem so over the top, it makes me wonder if they were just made up for the fun of it.

No places have perfect reviews... there is always positive and negative as not everyone is pleased with the service they receive and the conditions.

I had issue with Motel 6 one time and was checked in and got into the room... the room looked like there's a tornado mess inside. Beds were not made and the floor was a mess. I got back to the office and tried to speak to the manager which they said were out of town. They tried to get me in another room but I made them give me a refund and I was able to have a room in a different motel.

Some places are good, some bad... it depends on how management takes care of business.

I was driving back home at night and it was a 2 hours drive and I was tried and got lost so I went to a hotel with Finlay and told the owner what happen and that I did not have a credit card . The owner let me call my sister and see if I could use her credit card and the owner also gave me a discount b/c he felt bad for me getting lost at night. It was in the country and the roads are very dark and there where no stores around for miles. I should had given the hotel an A+ when I got home.

I see this as violation of 1st amendment and i think alcu should start get busy with this.

I done prove my wife that review isnt as accurate as she thinks it was.
There are too much "customer driven engineering" and it should be banned. Meaning if company dont want bad review, then dont offer review, period. Like all or none.
Now u guys see what I am saying? I knew there are too many "political fixes" that average Americans would have no clue, and wont believe it until fact is showing, hahaha! Fact never shows up if one wants hide. Corporation americans and politicans are getting smarter. Thanks to Nixon ERA.

If companies don't want bad reviews they should find ways to improve themselves rather than worrying about who said what and going after them. There will always be independent places, sites and word of mouth to propagate reviews- good and bad.

Yeah but the person in this story some of their jewelry was stolen and who know if that was true or not . If someone lied about that and hurt a company name they should be fines for this.

BUT if it's true and the hotel still fines the couple, that's not right. The hotel should file a lawsuit against the couple for defamation which requires the hotel to prove it instead of fining them.
