Hospital fails - Deaf man suffered

Why can any business like the hospital hire sign language intepreters including the workplaces for the Deaf? That is terrible when we could not get communications across to hearing professionals. Seven months, that is wrong of the hospital not give him ASL interpreters. Also what about paper and pen if both of them need to be informed about his medical concerns especially cancer? That does not make any sense. Every Deaf need to have their ASL interpreters which the business like the hospital. I am very sad the old man did not get them. :(
 
This is sickening if the accusations are true...

if he had 2 deaf offspring..... something just don't jive right now with the accusations tho

Well, not really. Everything except the explanation of what was wrong with him. I don't see why his kids couldn't tell him, unless they didn't understand either (which wasn't mentioned). If they didn't understand either, due to not having an interpreter, then it falls into place.
 
I keep hearing from my friends who lives in LI, lot of hospitals that dont provide interpreters and VRS dont work or Nurses or doctors dont know how to use it. Oh my god.
 
It is our deaf people's fault.

We need to give at the hospital's patient relations folks or social worker's office the names of sign language interpreting agencies and/or the name of sign language interpreters.
Don't give them to the nurses or the doctors or the security guard.

The hospitals in my county are prepared. They did provide Terps when I went there for family emergencies.

When I was in the hospital, I had excellent accommodations. The very 1st day, a Lady came and put CC's on my TV...showed me how to use the TTY (that the hospital provided)...some nurses knew a little ASL...and above my bed, a sign saying "Patient is deaf, but reads Lips"....Plus, my intrepretor came when the Doctor called for one....

The service this man got is simply terrible.
 
This is due to the audist attitudes that are still rampant in some areas. Audism destroy deaf people whether it is through death, mental breakdown, or language deficits.

When I had to go to ER I made it very clear I am HOH and that my name had to be called loud enough for me to hear it. People should find out if the ER and hospitals near them have interpreters for deaf and hoh people if they don't they should try to change that. The ADA Act is no good if people don't get ER and hospitals to follow it. If people can get away with not following a law they will do it. ER and hospitals are so busy they'll not take the get ASL interpreter , it's not right and they should not get away with it.
 
It seems strange to me the school requirements to learn Spanish and not teach some ASL or even SEE to the hearie students. SEE is easier for them and not that hard for us to figure out. They can always learn syntax later.
 
The thing is, whenever someone needs an interpreter for another language, say, Spanish, French, etc...if there is no interpreter, there is literally no way to communicate with them since they don't know English.

BUT, for deaf/HoH, if there's no interpreter, we can communicate by paper/pen. Even if there's no interpreter, it can be done by lipreading or paper/pen. There IS a way to communicate because deaf/HoH people know English.

IMO If communication fails, it's their fault because there's no excuse since there are ways to get information to the deaf/HoH. They just don't want to make the effort so they don't do it. We have to force them to do the work if there's no interpreter even if it takes twice as long.

Not all of them. And some have a limited working knowledge of English, limited enough that relying on it in a life-or-death setting could be dangerous.

Limited knowledge of English? How does one survive without knowing English? Everything is in English, TV captions, papers, and food. I don't believe that one minute. Who knows ASL and not know English? ASL is based on English words, fingerspelling on ABC. Doesn't make sense to me.

I know plenty of Deaf people whose English is really sketchy. They'll put sentences together, in an email or text message, that can lead to lots of misunderstandings. Or they can easily misunderstand something written to them. Not all Deaf people, obviously. But enough that I think good interpreters should always be available. And CDIs as well.

Especially in urgent settings like hospitals.
 
As an interpreter who has worked many assignments in hospitals and doctors' offices, I need to say something.

Pen and paper notes DO NOT WORK for every deaf patient.

They are the people who are NOT posting at AD but they are out there, and they are deserving of full access to their medical care.

Note writing is often just an excuse by the health care providers to not hire a qualified interpreter.

Yes unfortunately, I met several elder or foreign or some USA Deaf people who have limited english But excellent in ASL.

Right, what's more, if it were me i rather interpreter than writing a paper if it requires to discuss with doctor. Its a MUST an interpreter for me.

I was pregnant and was ready to give birth to a baby. HOW THE HECK do I do that I write a paper and pen while i gave birth to a baby. :lol:

Lots of hearing people have limited engish. Hearing people who cant read or write but excellent in speaking. same as ASL users.
