I found it interesting when my son came to me. He asked me for my opinion, and i wasn't sure what did he mean by that. So i kept reading and then it dawns on me, and kept quiet. I asked him, "what am i looking at??" He said, " those words are strange for me to do homework..." I understand how he feels about it. I am so proud of my son that he recognizes it and know what is it meant. I agree with him about this one. I am not going to say it until you guys say something.

keeping an open mind. No need to agrue in here.

I was really intrigued by this passage or text and did look it up in Wiki, to be honest. I at first thought it was an old story, because of what you're seeing. But I guess it's not.

I think if your son was thinking about it and it leads to discussion, that could be good.

I could write more but want to see what others think too.

What grade is he in? What subject is this homework? This is a very strange assignment, indeed.

Hes in 5th grade. I agree that i was stunned when I read it. I would not say it to my son until he told me himself. I said, " i agree with you, if you feel comfortable telling your teacher about it." He said, " i will see how i feel about it. " take his time. He told me that he tends to comment on everything and teachers got tired of his questions. So he is waiting for the right moment to discuss about it.

I am not sure what subject is it. I think it relates with english class ( extra credits).

I was stunned too, which was why I thought it was more like an "outdated" book example or something.

What subject was this homework? What were the students supposed to do with it?

It seems like a bizarre piece for 5th graders to read.

I don't think your son asks too many questions. I think the teacher might be issuing too much questionable material.

From what I read when I investigated, it seems to be commonly used in some curricula as a teaching tool on certain themes.

When I was in elementary, we used play scripts that very much resembles your son's assignment. :dunno:

My thought exactly when I read it.

Is it a way to approach the subject, even at an elementary school level ?

This is very odd curriculum indeed if it is not pointing out or addressing that subject matter ??

A little hard to interpret the intention of the wording without reading the context leading up to it and after, also discussion forum in class. From what was presented, this is indeed racism.

Huh.................anyone else just sort of think "wow" when you read this ?

I looked this and the book is about breaking down stereotyping and racism .
But I am not sure if all 5 grades will get this.

Ok...............

I agree with you, at the 5th grade level will this generate the correct dialogue in class for discussion ?

It has questions in the back of paper but it has nothing to do with the question I am talking about. Except, that the small articles is in it. My son didnt like it. I told him if he dislikes the words, and let teacher know. I ll find out if he plans to talk to teacher or not. I am not pushing him to do it. I just found it odd when he came to me and told me how he feels about it. " weird words" I agree with him!

i always find this a delema are you bringing racism to young kid who had no conception of it in first place...if kids not had concept in first place then would it exist...i felt bit confused by it until got to last bit

My son dislikes the worded in paper stated, " white kids..... black kids... " he said, why can't they say KIDS without using the describe what kids look like.

i agree with him.

I know a woman that has a biracial daughter , they where a public bus once and people where trying to guess what race the girl was out loud and the mother was getting very up set. Finally an other little girl on the bus said " I know what she is, she is a little girl!" It's amazing how much smarter kids are than adults sometime. You're doing a great job raising your son, we could use more parents like you.

To me that shows how outmoded the lesson is becoming. The new generation is growing up without old prejudices, and lessons like this just introduce it to them.

It seems counterproductive to me.
