Homeowner Loses Insurance Policy Over Pit Bull?.. WTF

So if you had a Volvo 850 Turbo, then you're supposed to tell them Volvo 850 Turbo, not just Volvo 850.

Same thing with dogs. You're supposed to let them know upfront what you have. What if your agent just happened to walk on your block and saw you walked in your own house with a Pitbull? Ohhh, then you get no refund!!

Stupidity and discrimination knows no bounds. The ironic reality is that the toy breeds so common in apartments/condos have higher rates for biting and being aggressive. I hope someone reaches out to help this woman. These laws are just senseless, and sadly, even if her family dog was a service dog, they'd still have dropped her like a rock. There should be laws prohibiting discriminatory policies against owners of non-violent dogs. It's the same thing as discriminating against a person for what he/she might do based on nothing more than prejudice.

technical issues w/insurance carriers, landlords and so on are very common, we see this all the time in shelter and rescue, and as a Rottweiler-household, it's something we took into consideration in terms of our homeowner's policy - which does not discriminate.

I'm going to remember those two carriers. Honestly, if you don't respect me as a person and my choices for a pet, you don't need to have my money either....thanks for the info....

It's not really a problem with the breed of dog but what kind of training the owner gives the dog.

Bad training = bad dog
Good training = happy dog

Smaller dogs can be trained (or neglected) to be aggressive and awful too.
Not to mention pit bulls used to be called the "nanny dog" and were trusted to watch out for children.. lol

A 2009 study in the Journal of Forensic Science ($$), found that the owners of vicious dogs, regardless of the breed, had “significantly more criminal behaviors than other dog owners.” The researchers added that “vicious dog owners were higher in sensation seeking and primary psychopathy,” and concluded that “vicious dog ownership may be a simple marker of broader social deviance.” And according to the ASPCA, “Pit Bulls often attract the worst kind of dog owners.”

Pitbulls do not have special “locking jaws” – that's pure mythology. They don't demonstrate some sort of special shaking action when they bite – all dogs display similar biting behavior. Pitbulls do not exert an unusual amount of bite-force for their size. Multiple studies have found that bite force correlates to body-weight, and tests of three breeds conducted by National Geographic found that the American pitbull terrier exerted less bite-force than German shepherds or Rottweilers.

The problem with small toy breeds is the owners often treat it as a toy, in the sense of furniture. All dogs need human interation: they need socialization, they need attention. Any person that's treating the dog like furniture and only spending time with them after from work is creating an aggressive dog. You can't just abandon an animal for eight hours a day and leave them in an insolated environment and expect to have a happy, well socialized animal - that takes active involvement.

Well they certainly aren't as powerful as a pitbull but I know a guy who's Dotson sent someone to the hospital for a few stiches. And little dogs can be very dangerous to children.

My little doggie will kiss you to death!! She loves everyone. When we have company she does not discriminate laps.

My mom has three dogs, a scottie, weiner dog and a pit mix. I was freaked when she got the big dog but she is the sweetest dog ever.

Husky loves to go after small animals so this may be why they're not list. I think their blue eyes freak some people out.

Huskies aren't on "the list" but in one sense...They're the breed of dog most like wolves in that they're true pack animals. They don't bark, their howling can be heard up to eight miles away. They go after small animals because of their predatory nature. They're are a number of different types of Huskies, one of which is known as the Alaskan Malamute, famously referred to as sled dogs...which are slaughted when their fun factor runs out. Not much different from Pitbills and Rotties. It's the attitude "We don't care that they sweet, we want to kill them just in case".....When people single out specific breeds, they target all of them....and all of the excuses are equally stupid and senseless....

Huskys don't have the biggest teeth but sure do hurt. One went and freaked out on me and got in 3 bites before stopping. They are high strung dogs. Have been bitten by german shepards and peek a poos too. Never turned me off to the dogs, they just have problems like people but have no real way to express themselves. Hopefully will avoid getting bitten by a pitbull, their jaws and built to crush

Siberian Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds, Inuit dogs - are all different breeds built for different types of pulling to some degree. The Husky and Mal look pretty different <to me> and have crossed over into "average" and non-working household popularity, which can be harder for these dogs as they are by nature a more aloof and independent breed, love to run and meant to go for miles and miles. Samoyeds haven't been used as the draft and herding animals they were originally for many years. Arctic Inuit dogs are a very very rare breed, closer to a feral dog, and are not recommended for anything less than a rural cold/work-type environment. These last are not meant to be pets.

Alaskan Huskies are any combination of the above, plus types like hounds, for added athletic/personality attributes. They are not considered a "pure-bred" and are the current standard on many racing teams.

Pit bulls jaws are not different than any other dog of the same size.
The type does have: high pain tolerance, CAN be very game <varies>, CAN have high prey drive <varies> and CAN be dog-aggressive <varies>.
They also as a group tend to be very loving, loyal and tolerant with any people.
