Homeowner Susie Salazar Loses Insurance Policy Over Pit Bull | AOL Real Estate

"We were informed that you have a pit bull in your home, and we have to drop your coverage," Salazar recalled being told by the AFI rep. "I'm mad, I'm upset," Salazar continued. "They don't even know my dog. They don't know what kind of dog he is. He's just full of joy and love. He's just a happy, happy dog." She said that AFI had insured her for 17 years, and she didn't sign any paperwork that mentioned anything about pit bulls. She's had Gauge for four years.

"These are tough situations," AFI spokesman Steve Witmer told KUSA. "Many years ago, we made a decision that there were certain breeds of dogs that we would no longer insure, and pit bulls are one of those breeds." Witmer explained that the costs of dog-bite claims were too high for the company to continue to cover.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, dog bites made up more than a third of homeowners insurance liability claims in 2011 and cost insurance companies a total of $478.9 million. That was up 16.1 percent from 2010 and 47.7 percent from 2003. The average cost per claim in 2011, the Institute said, was $29,396. Sixty-two percent of U.S. households -- or 72.9 million -- own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association. Of those, 46.3 million own a dog

Yeah....even many apartment complexes will not allow certain breeds...even over 50 lbs. And inasmuch as I would like a large breed of dog, feel I would not be able to control it...I'm too lienent and spoil my own small doggie.

Many people fear large dogs...as I have a fear of Horses....and they sense that fear....My friend has 2 large dogs in her home....and whenever I go over, I have to go into her home via the garage. Her dogs are vicious.

What's about your home insurance policy? not landlord/tenant issues.

If her dogs are vicious, I wouldn't want to visit her house at all.

Are you sure she's a friend?

I had pitbull (Staffordshire Terrier) for 16 years, she was wonderful dog, she has bite not even single human being. My house while having that dog was never robbed, we rarely locked our house during the time our wonderful dog was there. Our front door is french style, easy for somebody to break in but never happened while other neighbors got them robbed.

Any kinds of animals, better stay far away from my dog, even birds. LOL

Do you have home insurance? Did agents know you had a pit bull or You didn't tell them?

It's not just the size of the dog, it's the propensity towards viciousness that causes insurance companies to limit their liability.

There are many breeds of dogs larger than pit bulls that are not considered vicious, and have no problem getting insurance coverage.

I've known some mean little dogs.

:giggle:...Mean "little" doggies...oh yes....my own doggie is little and a little rolly-polly...but she's overly protective...she likes females but not males (strangers)...gets along with my boys...and guards the yard...will not let a male pet her that she does not know or dislikes...She gets snappy at times...:giggle:...so with a little doggie like that...who needs a Pit Bull?

Wow, blame on irresponsible owners that have many dog bites claim that force insurance to no longer to offer the coverage.

It is getting tightened up because they lost money due to many dog bites claim - happened to my aunt.

Even if she find insurance to cover the dog bite so insurance cost will be very greater.

For hundreds of years pitbulls were bred for fighting each other or other animals. It used to be considered a sport. Down south it was bigggg. Vicks was just following the tradition. Now a days these same dogs can be said to be sweet and all. But when their inbred instincts kick in they do a lot more damage. I've had dog bites/puncture wounds. Nothing like what a pitbull will do with no effort. Insurance companies know this history
