Basic question: Is there any easy to install (ie wireless) alerting system that works with a smoke detector, and doesn't cost an arm and a leg?

I have existing hard wired smoke detectors on all floors, but of course now I can't hear them. I tend to float around to many different rooms throughout the day, so I would need to have strobes or something in a bunch of rooms (at least six). So far the equipment I've seen would put this total around $500 or more. I have a system now from Sonic that covers doorbell, telephone, alarm clock, etc, but not smoke detector. Can another company's smoke detector transmitter work with the existing equipment? Does Sonic have something that might hook into the existing smoke detectors?

Thanks

There's none. I know BRK Electronics (which make and sell fire alarms) do sell one w/ strobe. Cost a bit over $100 each.

IF you are good with electronics. You can use Baby Cry signaller, remove the Microphone (be sure to follow polarity). Get long 20 or 22 guage wires (two wires in one strand) which is long enuf from SA Baby cry to fire alarm.. Solder one end of wires to SA Babycry and solder other end to Microphone. Tuck in the microphone inside the fire alarm and adjust the Baby Cry sensitivity control until it cannot be sensitive to background noise. Press Fire alarm button to see if it will flash the SA Receivers. If it does, then you're all set for. I sure hope that Fire Alarms are Interconnected with another fire alarms (IF one fire alarm in one room beeps, rest of fire alarm across the house will beeps too).

Figured it out!

I just received the Sonic Alert kit today and tried it out. There's a nifty feature on the doorbell button that picks up electromagnetic pulses. I put it next to my door chime, it flashes the lights when tested. I put it next to my smoke detector, it flashes the lights when tested. I put it next to my computer, it flashes the lights (OK, not so useful, but interesting anyway) .

So all I need to do is get another door bell sensor, set it to be the back door, get a few receivers with strobes, and I'm set. For alot less money, since the kit comes with three receivers as well. So no disecting baby cry monitors needed. :wiggle: :h5:

I talked with my roommate about those strobe lights that are installed around the home. One thing he said was that there are two kinds of wireless signaling devices. The first kind only goes through the circuit breaker until the end. The second kind goes through the circuit breaker in a full loop.

The first kind... if you had the wireless signaler plugged into an outlet that is connected to the 3rd switch of the circuit breaker, it will signal everything after the 3rd switch to the end. If your alarm clock is plugged into an outlet that is connected to the 2nd switch, then the signal won't go to your alarm clock because it's after the switch for the alarm clock.

The second type of signaler will go full loop from 3rd to end and back to 1st, then 2nd.

I'll try moving things around the house to make sure it will work before investing in more gear. Thanks for the information.

Try it next to CI if you are wear'n and see if it flashes LOL

I did move the clock to two separate circuits (both different than the doorbell receiver, and it worked fine, so this solution will work for me.

No, I don't have a CI right now. I will seriously consider it in the future, but right now they refuse to even talk much about it until my transplant complications settle out. Many things to consider when the time comes, though.
