WASHINGTON — Hillary Rodham Clinton (search), acknowledging tirades and tears over her husband's affair with Monica Lewinsky (search), says former President Clinton lied to her about the relationship until the weekend before he admitted as much to a grand jury.

The New York senator vividly describes her pain over the betrayal in Living History (search), her new memoir covering her eight years in the White House. A copy of the book, which goes on sale Monday, was obtained by The Associated Press.

"The most difficult decisions I have made in my life were to stay married to Bill and to run for the Senate from New York," she writes.

She says she accepted her husband's story at first -- that he had befriended the White House intern when she asked for job-hunting help, "had talked to her a few times" -- and that the relationship had been horribly misconstrued.

"For me, the Lewinsky imbroglio seemed like just another vicious scandal manufactured by political opponents."

More than six months later, with the president preparing to testify before a grand jury, Mrs. Clinton was still adamant that her husband had done nothing wrong and was the victim of a "vast right-wing conspiracy."

Then, on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, he woke her up, paced at the bedside, and "told me for the first time that the situation was much more serious than he had previously acknowledged."

"He now realized he would have to testify that there had been an inappropriate intimacy. He told me that what happened between them had been brief and sporadic."

He was ashamed and knew she would be angry, she recounts.

"I could hardly breathe. Gulping for air, I started crying and yelling at him, 'What do you mean? What are you saying? Why did you lie to me?' I was furious and getting more so by the second. He just stood there saying over and over again, 'I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I was trying to protect you and Chelsea."'

Mrs. Clinton's 562-page book has been highly anticipated. Simon & Schuster, expecting large sales, ordered an extraordinary first printing of 1 million copies.

The first lady-turned-senator was paid a $2.85 million advance toward the $8 million book deal. Foreign rights have already been sold in 16 countries. List price is $28.

The publisher billed the book as a complete, candid accounting of her years in the White House.

Mrs. Clinton said that up until that August morning when her husband confessed, she believed he was being railroaded and had merely been foolish by paying any attention to Lewinsky. She was incredulous that he would endanger their marriage and family.

"I was dumbfounded, heartbroken and outraged that I'd believed him at all."

She said the president's eyes filled with tears when she told him he would have to confess to their teenage daughter as well.

She ultimately decided she still loved her husband, although "as a wife, I wanted to wring Bill's neck."

She describes in bitter terms the months of chill between them, never more painful than when they went to Martha's Vineyard for vacation right after his testimony.

"Buddy, the dog, came along to keep Bill company. He was the only member of our family who was still willing to."

While on the island, she felt "nothing but profound sadness, disappointment and unresolved anger. I could barely speak to Bill, and when I did, it was a tirade. I read. I walked on the beach. He slept downstairs. I slept upstairs."

She said her decision to run for a Senate seat from New York provided a healing bridge for them. "Bill and I were talking again about matters other than the future of our relationship. Over time we both began to relax."

She was the first first lady to run for elected office, defeating the Republican candidate, former Rep. Rick Lazio, in 2000. She was sworn into the Senate the same month her husband left office in January 2001. She recounted their last day at the White House, waltzing down a long hallway in her husband's arms.

She concludes that what her husband did was morally wrong but not a betrayal of the public.

On the Whitewater matter that dogged much of their time in the White House, the former first lady acknowledges only "public relations mistakes in how we handled the growing controversy."

"Whitewater never seemed real because it wasn't."

Mrs. Clinton portrays Whitewater partner Jim McDougall as an embittered man who threatened her several times when she tried to file overdue tax returns for the property.

The payback came, she said, when her husband decided to run for president in 1991 and McDougall planted "false information about our relationship" in the press, claiming he had refused favors from Clinton when he was governor.

The final report on the Whitewater investigation questioned the first lady's truthfulness. Independent Counsel Robert Ray's report concluded that the Clintons' mid-1980s Arkansas land venture benefited from criminal activity and that the president and his wife gave factually inaccurate testimony, but there was not enough evidence to prove the former first family engaged in wrongdoing.

Mrs. Clinton's political stock is on the rise, although she insists she will not consider entering the race for president this year. She has not ruled out a run in 2008. :ugh:

She is among the Democrats' top fund-raisers. She has raised more than $3 million for her political action committee, HILLPAC, which she uses to support other Democrats running for office.

She will be our FIRST woman president of United States of America if she will win the election. Is not it interesting? Wonder what will this society, economic, education, taxes, health, etc.. be look like ? Support adoration, lesbian, etc.. ??

She tries to sell those books to make more profit to support her election presidental in year of 2008 !

Who will vote her as a President in 2008 ??

I consider that Hilary Clinton as the most brilliant politician. I understand that she is not ready to seek presidential term in theyear of 2004 for her own reasons. However, her decision to seek presidential term in 2008 is a good question. We need some democrats because BUSH is not doing good job at keeping USA afloat. He is very interested in declaring a WAR with Saddem Hussein and Osama bin Liden. I understand he wanted to finish his father's unfinished business with Middle East perverts, but we can't do anything about it, but we just protect against them through self awareness.

I hope someone else will outplay Bush in year of 2004 presidential term.

My guts is feeling that Pres Brush will be win for next 2004 Presidental. The wealth people love him more. We will receive 400 to 1,000 dollars credit tax refund by this coming July. It is depend on how much you pay taxes during year of 2003. The Federal owe us for credit children. Image family have have 5 children more than 80K income a year. They will receive 1,000 dollars per child. Total is 5K. Jeeze !

What is more, Bush did a good job to whipe out Iraq and change their Government system. But.. Where Bin Laden and Saddam are ? I believe, Saddam and Bin Laden are still alive somewhere places.

Hillary Clinton knew, Bush obviously will win next Presidental year of 2004. Did you notice no one else motivate to be demoration electional for the President this year ? They know, Bush will win.

I think Kennedy family is cursed :P That's what it looks like to me...

no offense, but is this supposed to be in the current effects section? eh whatever...

eh anyway, why couldn't they just break up? Hilary Clinton just wanted to stay with him longer so she would have the "power" to become the senator of NY...that's why. "power" always come to mind before anything else...pathetic.

My bet is that Hillary was watching everything through a crack in the door, smoking a cigar and whispering "Yeah, that's right bitch... suck it." How could she not know? He cheated on her how many times with how many women??? I mean, come on now! This wasn't the shock the media made it out to be.

It has nothing with Bush's poor job on USA afloat. You see...

• Bush allow to push more and found many funny about businesses which they were lie to stockholder such as Enron, MCI and many other companies.

• Bush did a excellent job to end Iraq when we were sick of Clinton's delay, Iraq is one of few evil axis, do you know that? We need strong leader who can take war like Roosvelt who decide to have a war against Japan.

• Bush have reason to offer tax cut so, it will save their business for little more time. And hope to grow business again.

• We don't need soft-president like Bill Clinton who interest in sex n' love not war. We need combine!

I bet President George W. Bush will WIN his presidency as second term. Not that surprise.

But one thing is what??? Will Bush able to escape from "Mystery Curse" ???? Look at some presidents died during office term in every about 20 years. Only one president escaped from Mystery Curse is Ronald Reagan that was about 20 years ago! Make me wonder if Bush really can avoid that curse or not.

I am curious what will the society be looks like when we will have a Female President of United of States America.

Will the females become more oppressive on males in the jobs, schools, courts, banks, etc... ???

Is not it interesting to see first time in the history female president of USA ?

I realise this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to say that what Hillary Clinton did was a very brave thing to do. Not many women would stand for affairs their husbands did behind their backs. I know that some would give their spouses 2nd chance if they had an affair, but admitted to it and were geninuely remorseful for their actions and wanted to make up and not do it again...my feeling is that Bill Clinton has since cleaned up his act and been a good husband since then. Must have been the hardest few years since the Lewinsky affair, but look at them, they're apparently doing alright. Bravo to them...I would say.

I wish Hillary would dumped Clintion divorce him throw him out ... once a cheater will always will be a cheater can she handle that? Not me!!.. and If she runs for the president .. I would vote for her only if she leaves Bill.. I cant stand to see Bill's face on tv.. he makes me puke!

Hilary gonna be future turns into presdient.. *would be nice tho...* but gonna be first lady president..

Bush always finding excusing and unfinished his business somehow... He can find his own way and confient them. Who knows..
