We are on a journey to figure out what is going on with my son, he is 4 months old and pretty sure he is HOH or Deaf. We have an ENT appointment in a couple of weeks as a starting point. We also have a referral for a geneticist as a starting place for some other issues (behind on milestones, low weight, small head). At our 4 month appointment the ped did a loud clap in the office and he didn't blink, startle or show any reaction. Thinking back we are noticing he hasn't reacted to a lot of loud stimuli. The really ironic part of this whole thing is when I was in college I took ASL as my foreign language and flirted with the idea of becoming an interpreter. It's been 6 years since I've done any serious signing (did baby signs with my 4yo daughter) so I'm a bit rusty on everything. I know there are free ASL classes in my area and am going to call early intervention in my county to find a starting place. Any advice for walking this path with early intervention folks? Any advice for things to do for my son to help him? I've already adapted using my (very rusty) ASL with him/the family but would love to have any advice you could offer.

hey welcome to AD!

my hearing loss wasn't even noticed until I got hearing aids at 6 months old (6months, 2 years) but I did had a mild/moderate loss at that time

if you look at my avvie, I have cool looking hearing aids :D

Welcome!!! What state are you in? Contact your state's Deaf School of course! Also join American Society For Deaf Children: American Society for Deaf Children
It's good at least you have a foundation of signing skills to work on....not too many parents have that.
What about spoken lanaugage training? Are you looking into HAs and/or CIs?

You are already on the right path with what you are doing! Keep it up, especially the ASL!

Thanks everyone. We are in ohio so OSD is our school. We actually live fairly close to the school. I have no idea what we will do as far as interventions. Not even sure about pre school, we are doing homeschool for my dd so the idea of separation of us at a young age breaks my heart. But if he is able to be around more people who use ASL I think may be best.

Think is awesome that you already have some ASL. This could prove invaluable in future. Welcome to AD!

Just want you to know that there is another school in Ohio, just in case you want to compare. My alma mater, St. Rita School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is located in Cincinnati. I went there just for high school.
