Hello everyone! I already posted something in the wrong place... I posted it under something about ASL, SEE, Oralism. It is a question unrelated to this topic. Oops. Anyway, my name is Wendy and I am hearing. I am taking Elementary ASL 1 at a local community college. In the summer, I will move on to ASL 2; in the fall I will be entering into the Deaf Studies/Interpreter Option. In my class, my teacher is Deaf, one student is HOH, and the rest of the students are hearing. I attend a church in Lexington, MA as often as I can to attend the interpreted service and the ASL-only Bible study. Once a month, the Deaf Ministry there holds a Deaf Movie Night, where we eat dinner together, watch a Christian movie, and have a discussion about the movie. I love it. I cannot sign a whole lot, but the people there are very patient and kind. One woman took me under her wings and teaches me and helps me to understand. I have a passion for Deaf Studies and ASL, and have since I was a child. I live in NE Massachusetts. Thanks for listening. Wendy

Hi Wendy

I am also hearing and take classes at the Deaf society here in Port Elizabeth.
It is very hard to find a deaf person here to practise signlang. I learn more about ASL online as in the classroom.
By the way I am from Prt Elizabeth in South Africa, and Afrikaans speaking. Look over the spelling mistakes
regards
Pieter

Hi Pieter,
I had a friend named Amanda who served at a ministry in New Hampshire. I loved her accent; she also spoke Afrikaans. She had an Afrikaans Bible that I liked to look at. It was really cool. I have a wonderful ASL teacher, and I learn a lot in the classroom, but I also do a lot of searching/studying outside the classroom because it is my desire to become fluent in ASL and knowledgeable about Deaf Culture. I absolutely love all my Deaf friends, and find that I not only can express myself better in ASL, but enjoy the company of Deaf people more than hearing (no offense to the hearing people on this list or my hearing friends).
Nice to meet you. :)
