My name is Dorothy Kernaghan-Baez. I'm 38 years old, married, have 2 kids, and 1 beautiful new granddaughter. I founded Georgia Family Rights and work full time on Family Rights issues.
I started having hearing loss issues as a child due to repeated severe ear infections. Because of damage from the infections, I've had balance and vertigo issues practically all my life. During my first year of college, it seemed like I kept an ear infection, and ended up deaf in my left ear. Then, when my children were little, I lost more hearing in my right ear.
I have hearing aids now, and I think I function pretty well. I learned to read lips in Spanish (my husband is Puerto Rican) when I was first married. (One of my heroes is Queen Alexandra of England, who became deaf as a teen and learned to lip read in the 5 languages she already spoke.)
I've never learned to sign, and I think I may try to learn now. (If the new grandkid is going to grow up speaking 2 languages, why not go for 3?)
I've been poking around the forums today, and I look forward to participating!
