Hi,
I am from Scotland, i have been deaf sinse birth caused by an medication that was given to me which caused nerve deafness. I have thus far managed to live with it and have progressed through life with great hardship in the hearing world. I am married to a non deaf lady and have 2 teenage kids who are not deaf ( That made me so happy ).

I found this forum by accident as for most of my life, I have tended to steer clear of deaf issues, thus having most people think i am just ignorant. These days, I am more chilled out and have always had a passion for music (listening and playing).

The thing that hurt me most in life was that as my father is a musician, i will never be able to call my self a musician.

I have kind of gotten used to the hearing world that I am in, my hearing loss is at high pitch which affects consonants and makes speach recognition difficult. Also the lower end of the hearing scale is affected. I rely very heavily on lip reading.

anyway, this is a great forum and have looked at some of the topics/posts and look forward to becoming an active member.

Hi SeerOfVisions :welcome: & enjoy AD. I have a father who is a military and jazz musician and I know how that goes... whenever I hear a trumpet playing I think of him. I have nerve deafness in both ears and loves to listen to 70's & 80's rock, yeah, Pink Floyd & Led Zepplin rocks!

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Hmm...from Scotland, anything in particular you'd like to share with us some of the interesting focal points, places there? Anyhow, hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD!! ;)

Hello!

Welcome to Alldeaf and enjoy your stay here ;)....

From Scotland? cool!

Hiya,
One of the main focal points in scoatland regarding deafness is total mis interpretation, alot of people think that if someone says they are deaf then it means that they cant hear at all. It is very difficult dealing with attitudes of people here. The authorities have now closed dow the school for the hard of hearing, forcing the pupils to attend the local grammar schools.
There is much to be done in the educating teachers and puple who can hear ok to understand the issues that face us.

I was quite lucky in the sense that my speach is actually so much better than my hearing. from my last audiological testing, my hearing capacity is only 25% on average though my speech is about 80%. I can understand why people sometimes get confused when they hear me speaking and then find that i dont hear them so well.

But yeah, i think that the biggest problems are with telephones, i can hear conversations ok for the most part but i cant actually hear them ring. This is due to the high pich frequency tone of those rings. I manage to find a phone that has a more mid range frequency which i hear ok.

When i consulted the deaf society about my problem, they said that they have a solution so i ask what it was. The guy took me into a room and there was a phone on the table, he got the phone to ring and i was almost blinded by the flashing light from the side.

he then told me that this is the answer to all my problems, oh yeh i said, what if i am in another room, he then said that i should purchace one of those (lighthouse beacons) lights for each room.

I said to him , thank you for your assistance, but this will not help me.

so i stuck with the phone i found, though the ring annoys people.

I am intrested in hearing about your visions

Welcome to AD! Good to see you in here -- I know being deaf isn't easy for some...I didn't for the first 25 years of my life -- I finally came to terms with my deafness and accepted it as a part of me.

:welcome: I have a hearing dog...best thing invented since sliced bread. :thumb:
