Hey nearly 3 months now!!!!

Same here. I was able to use the phone within a few weeks of being activated, Altho I dont enjoy using it as much as I did back when I had reg hearing. Music tho on the other hand has been a blessing and was a big surprise to me that I can now enoy it like I used to. Regular everyday conversation is awsome now. I do take the implant off from time to time throughout the day and I have noticed a huge decline in my lip reading skills since now being able to hear the speech. I didnt think I would lose that but aparently it happens!

Yeah, that was the biggest drawback to the whole thing. My lipreading skills definitely went south big time. I have totally switched over to listening mode like the hearing (you know what I mean). In those rare times I'm without my CI (first thing in the morning, and etc.) my wife will not talk to me without my CI.

My lipreading without speech (voice) had gone down as well but it was already 28% pre implant so I do rely a great deal on speech to support my lipreading. My non lipreading skills are on the increase but very slowly, it's difficult to keep up with practice when I don't have regular person who willing to take time to hold conversation on the phone with me on the other end. My mom will but she lives 2 countries away "think phone bill - $$$!!"

I'm sorry to hear that no one will take the time to help you using a phone. Hopefully, you can find somebody to help you. What may help is listening to talk radio all the time. That will sharpen your listening skills.

OTP Cochlear has telephone number you can call and get some practice that way. You dial their toll free number and you have a choice of listening to either single words or a short story over the phone for free! You can also go to their website and read along to the story when your listening to it, I have done it a few times myself but not too terribly much as I really dont talk on the phone much as it is. Call 1-800-458-4999 and follow the prompts. Or visit Telephone With Confidence | Hope

I have been listening to the weather forcast/shipping forecasts (i live near and breathe the sea air!) but will need to move on to BBC radio. I am also using audio books at the moment but it's pretty boring!...

That would be ideal but sadly I don't think we have those type of training in UK, although i am going to cochlear headquarters next week and may drop a line or two! It is hard but I am plugging for somebody to give me the practice... even it's just for 5 mins or something. At my work place I listen to the announcements and work it out for myself then ask my collegues if I heard it right, it's not too bad but it sounds so distorted, I would say I get 2 out of every 10 announcement.

Thank you for your suggestions guys.

Sorry to bump an old thread of mine, but it's still on topic! Today I put my implant on and for some odd reason when I turned it on I accidently hit the program button and went into a diff program. Now I have been using my everyday program since Ive been given this because I didnt notice a difference wit them all before. Today I was in the prgram that drowns down sounds and focus on speech.. Man it was weird I noticed when I would hear a constant sound..like water running it would be loud at first then simmer to a real quite hum.. pretty intresting that I can now get full use out of these diff programs. It takes time I guess to learn what your hearing and not hearing ..

Since I was part of a study with my CI in the beginning, I got real familiar with the programs they provided me. They wanted to try all kinds of things. I even got to experience different refresh rates up to 2400 cpi (I settled for 1800 cps - partly due to battery burn rates :D).

The pgm you mentioned is called Autosensitivity. I rarely use it but it is nice when the ambient/surrounding noise level is very high. I stick with ADRO about 98% of the time. When listening to music, I might go for Music (Beam & Whisper).

Way too hard for me. I can tell when they talking on and off, but not the actual words. I do get the syllables though, but not enough. Back to training for me!

I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I have just been activated a bit over 2 months ago with HiRes90k for my right ear and been practicing with AB's Listening room ever since. Had 5 mappings in nearly 3 months (ridiculous right?) It's worth it nd I'm progressing so far and every time I think I "peaked" with the current programs I get, I email/call my audi nd get another appointment. No time to waste! It's like running new tires and they extremely good till it dies (peaks) and by the time the tires are no good (peaked), you are in the situation where you need a new change (mapping, so you can start brand new from there and waste no time... :D

It's fun to learn (hear) something new and then you like.. happy for the rest of the day since it's working!! :deaf:
