Hello, everyone! My name is Allyson and I am HoH since birth. I am only a member in family who has a hearing loss so it is a challenge. I grew up oral and went to mainstreamed school. I never exposed to, ASL, Deaf Culture or was introduced to Deaf resources. RIT/NTID and I was nervous at first because I didn't know what to expect. After a few years, I was so happy to be part of community.

I'm new at this also. Lost all my hearing overnight. Im trying to find someone to teach me ASL. Havent had much luck at that though.Wish you all the luck. There are many nice people on this site. You can learn a lot from them. I

Alyson, do you think that hearing people do not understand the strengh of a dhh community? I know how you are....damn if only I'd known abt this growing up...right?

I am sure some do but just my experinces in my family. No one told me nothing when growing up so I knew nothing. Only thing I know is signing itself in HS. What do you mean by the way? Not sure.

Have you talked to a coclear implant specialist?? I have heard it is for people who lose all or almost all their hearing.. I know here in florida they have space coast center for independent living that does asl.. colleges do have it but it is more money ..check libraries too..sincerely, Sara hope this helps..

welcome to AD, same here but it's a mystery since I may have the same syndrome as one the posters here :) so have a happy xmas!

JW, you mention that some people tease you about being slow....do you have other issues too? Are you going to go to NTID or another school? Did you know that there's a Deaf Vocational program at American School for the deaf? There's also Southwest Insistute for the deaf and hard of hearing which is a community college program specificly for dhh students.
