hi there. my name is ryan and im 18. i always loved music. my first experience with music was when i was 7 i got a record player and pink floyd the wall LP. and 2 jensen tower speakers at 500 watts apeice. i never new of the damage i was doing. by the age of 14 i got an ipod. all day long i listened full blast. i even wanted it louder so i got an inline amp. then at 16 the ringing started. me being stupid and ignorant i just kept listening. now at the age of 18 i have -60db hearing loss. i dont know how i never noticed it get this bad. my ears just popped one day and never recovered. and i wouldn't mind being hard of hearing but the ringing! oh god the ringing is killing me. im not sure what to do but i know i will be like this for the rest of my life(no matter how short it may end up being)

anyways i hope to hear from some others(no pun intended) about how long you have had hearing loss/damage and how you cope.

forgot to mention. i know nothing about sign language or lip reading. im in the dark. i have a laptop at all times and i have people type things out for me. i really hope i get my hearing back but the doc says its gone for good. i feel like such an idiot. i cannot believe i took it for granted.

Welcome Ryan!! Hope you stick around on AD! The ringing is tinnitus- there is no cure but I know there's some things you can do to reduce them.

My deafness was picked up at 9 months old but my deafness was noticed around 7/8 months old. I have a cochlear implant which I've had for 9 years.

Enjoy your stay on AD

Welcome, Ryan :)

Don't feel bad about your hearing loss, you're in the right place to understand what's happening to you and... this is a great culture! so enjoy the new world :D

Welcome to AllDeaf!!!

We do have a thread in the "Our World, Our Culture" titled Adjustment to Late Onset Deafness" that would be a good thing for you to read. I am late-deafened and loving it, but I've had a long time to adjust.

:welcome: to Alldeaf, Ryan. I never really knew that loud music could cause such a huge loss. I think we have the same loss (decibel-wise), but I've had mine since birth.

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. Listen to the late deafend pro and you will learn to adjust or adapt to your silence world. It has often happen to many hearing young people who refuse to turn down their music like cd or records. Like Loghead said it is decibel-wise. I guess you have learned your lesson of how you lose your hearing for good. For now, just have fun reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.

Welcome Ryan! I'm sharing your post with my 15 yr old son... we're constantly telling him to turn the sound down on his pc... My hearing isn't the greatest and I can hear it across the room sometimes!
