Hello

My brother is going to try for his GED, but I don't know how it will work out for him. We also don't have any programs after high school. He was told by his school counselor that 'he can drop, get his GED, graduate and then work at goodwill, they always hire special people' makes me mad! We do have some private schools but they cost so much and they don't have a program for aspergers kids. I feel like more parents of audtistic children should stand up for their education around here, but most get cash assistance and pay someone to homeschool their child. I don't know what I will do, I am running out of time since my daughter is 3 and will be ready for school soon.

There are RESIDENTAL postsecondary programs for academic Aspies!
Or wait.... Is he high functioning but not so high functioning that he'd do well at a college? I do have a listing of postsecondary programs for Aspie level kids.. Would you like me to post them?......I don't agree that he should work at Goodwill....he sounds too high funcitoning for that!

He is high functioning, you would never know something is wrong until he tries to talk, he was never socialized around people outside of the family. I have tried many times to talk to him but our conversation are 2 minutes long if I am lucky.
Also yes if you could post the link, I would love to know some options. Maybe I can give them to him too. I don't know if college will be his thing last year he was diagnosed with epilepsy which he has never had a problem with until last year. He has an episode 3 times a week. It's crazy, he was fine and than one day it all started.

I'll post some programs for "grey area" kids too. It sounds like he would really benefit from a variety of programs. Has he not had a lot of exposure to other kids like him? Like the other kids in sped tend to be more garden variety LD? Here are the programs!!!! https://www.minnesotalifecollege.org/ http://www.taftcollege.edu/tcwp/til/?page_id=996 http://www.riverviewschool.org/GROW http://www.lesley.edu/threshold/ http://www.cotting.org/site/PageServer?pagename=HOPEhouseWelcome http://perkinsprograms.org/who-we-serve-2/ http://www.nyit.edu/vip/ and FINALLY.......http://cipworldwide.org/

He has never meet another student with aspergers, I looked at the links which are great except kind of far from home. He is really not a pack up and leave state kind of guy. If I can get him out of the house that would be great lol. I will ask my family friend about programs here but she hadn't found any last time I talked to her. The one in California would be a good one if I could get my dad to go with him.

How old is he? Is he still young enough for camp? A lot of special needs camps go up til age 22. So maybe he could go to camp this summer and meet other kids like him.......then that might get the wheels turning...." there are schools like this camp?!?!?"
And yeah I hear you.... but that's b/c that specific student population is still (even with the increase in autism) low incidence. Most high functioning LD kids tend to attend public colleges with disabilty supports.
But more affected but still have academic/independent living capabiltiy students tend to be kind of low incidence....So the programs aren't everywhere........ They are definitly worth it thou..... Kids THRIVE in them!!!!

He is 17, and I am sure he will strive in a program like that but getting him to go to another state would be hard. I should look into camps. I would have to really convince my dad to let him go because of my brother epilepsy but I think it would help a lot. If my brother was more pet friendly I would help him get a seizure dog but he has never liked animals and could hardly take care of himself. I wish he would grow up and see all the ways he can help himself instead of giving up

Oh, so he's still young? He's opting for high functioning traditional gradation rather then waiting til he's 22? Let me find information about camps etc.
Just a word of advice......I could be wrong, but from what you've told me it doesn't sound like he's super high functioning, and you guys also don't seem to be the type who might not understand about the downsides of inclusion ..... but, for postsecondary stuff, try to nudge him towards high functioning special needs stuff. Yes, he's high functioning enough not to have to do a sheltered workshop approach.....but total inclusion in the mainstream is also very dangerous too.....I can tell you horror stories. I actually think that Aspie and high functioning autistic kids need to not worry too much about academics, but worry more about specialized social emotional development.

His main problem is, since he doesn't live with me, is our father is a basement nerd. Like he has a job but other than that he stays inside and watches anime, play rpgs and goes to game night with 7 of his friends like he has for the last 20 years, that is my brother role model. ... Which is not helping his aspie at all. I have tried but my brother and I have not lived together in 5 years, so we are kind of a stranged. I only recently become interested in his academic problems because he won't be graduating with his class so he wants to drop completely which would be worst for him. Without school he would be in his room 24/7 since all his 'friends' live online.

Ugh.... so typical nerd type? Let me post a bunch of Aspie/LD camps. Even if they are far away, they will help him socially relate to other kids like him.
He needs to get out of that basement. So let me guess.... He really doesn't have "friends" except for those online right?

I think he had 2 real friends but they text each other even when in the same room. ... your link was 404 :(

They both look great, the ba one I can't find where the camp is located. Do you know where it is?
