Hey everyone,
I'm just a normal 24 year old from Missouri looking to meet more deaf people. I have been learning ASL/ Signed English for a couple years now. I am a care giver and I currently take care of a deaf person as my client is elderly. I really enjoy communicating with her but doesn't always feel up to chatting so I decided that the internet would be a great place to meet new friends and being as I am single maybe even a a potential relationship. I'm open to anything. I have a passion for people and I'm truly interested in deaf culture and maybe one day having a profession working with deaf people. I have so many passions and things that I like to do. So to hit me up :)

I guess this mean deaf and hoh people are abnormal people b/c you're not the first person to say you're normal.

Oh no...

That is not at all what I meant at all. I mean normal as in people of any kind are crazy now a days period, hearing deaf it doesn't matter. I did not mean to offend you or anyone. Introductions are always hard for me why should this be any different. I'm really sorry.

:welcome: You aren't offensive. I'm normal too, but I'm deaf.

(Ignore those people who try to tell you I'm crazy) :P

Thank you

I'm not a person that ever means to offend anyone. I'm so fascinated by the deaf world. As a hearing person there are often things/ people i wish i could ignore. There aren't many deaf people were I live or at least not a lot so this seemed like a good idea to maybe meet some more, maybe I was wrong and I'm out of my element here. I just want to learn, I can't say that I understand what its like to be deaf and I can't ever unless I myself become deaf, which can easily happen so I do not put myself above other people. I love learning how to sign and I sign all the time even when its just me in the car signing to music when I'm driving (which I admit probably is not the safest thing for me to do because I'm not a skilled driver with out signing) Thank you for understanding. And I'm probably not normal really either, I have my flaws of course even with them I am no different from anyone we are all human.

Poor choice of Words

As someone that was called a 'reject student' or not normal that is how I see it.

Okay, That was an absolutely bad choice of words. I will not try to say that I understand what you have been through, but I have never put down a deaf person in my life and I would never purposefully try to be mean in anyway. I'm sorry if what I said offended you but that was not my intention at all. I'm sorry that you were ever called that, its not right or fair at all for anyone to say to anyone else.

It was not a bad choice of words. I want people to stop playing the victim. We have all been bullied, abused, misunderstood, cast aside, or neglected. But guess what folks, its not just deaf people. Everyone has suffered some sort of injustice by other people and/or groups. You want to be a strong person? You want to show deaf people are "normal". Than quit getting your feelings hurt so easy. This person joined for the purpose of meeting people and making friends. And this is the welcome they get? It's not the first time something like this happened here. And I'm telling you it's a huge turn off.

Also. Why would someone join a deaf forum if they thought they were superior than deaf folks and that we were abnormal. Pfft. Welcome Bitner. Not everyone is here to pick fights.

Thank you for defending me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'm sure something has happened in reverse. I can admit when I'm wrong and maybe it takes a little bit of stuff like that before you get better at being more sensitive to people. You are very sweet. :) and to the other guy, Sorry someone has hurt you that mad that you are still obviously hurt by that word. But in all honesty there is probably no one standard for normal.

I think she meant "normal" as in " typical" or "every day"....not nessarily normal as in " " Your child can be HEALTHY AND NORMAL"

Welcome, bitner90! :) I love it when a hearing person opens their eyes and looks into the deaf community. You mentioned that you'd maybe like to work with deaf people one day. What kind of job? An interpreter or a hearing specialist or a teacher at a deaf school? I'm just curious. I hope you have a good time on here. I joined a few days ago and it is a awesome place! :D

:welcome: to AllDeaf Forum.

You may be young, but if you are a caregiver. Make sure you are not looking down on your client, d/Deaf Elder. A d/Deaf person, no matter whether a person is young or old, can make decisions without the help from hearing person. They can do everything except they can not hear. Of course they will ask you for help if they need you or any other person.

Like Whatdidyousay! mentioned about being rejected and being ignored, I went through my struggles with hearing society especially in mainstream schools. I was never allowed to sign ASL because it is an oral school only with a group of us (hard of hearing and deaf students). That was in the old days back in 1950 and 1960.

In the hearing society, they don't understand our struggles when we want to sign ASL so bad that we become isolated. Also they tried to "fix" us to be like the hearing people. This does not work that way. But they refuse to listen to us and still think there is cure or better hearing devices that would make the deaf and hard of hearing to be really hearing like hearing people. Some can manage to hear while others can not hear well at all, not even CI (Cochlear Implant).

So you have to understand that being "normal" is what hearing people expect us to be like hearing people. We just don't like to use the word "normal" as we are not normal anyway.

Botti is only joking about being normal, too, but she is deaf. She is blind, deaf and also a wheelchair bound person.

So you have to understand our perspectives just like your client who is d/Deaf Elder.

I hope you enjoy reading and keep on posting here. See you around. :cool2:
