Hello to everyone!
I'm new (obviously) to group. For about 6 years, I've been learning sign language. Mostly using it at church now, it began though with a student in my classroom with a cochlea implant. Since then, I've tried to keep it up and sign during church.
Would like to one day go to school and learn to be better and be an interpretor.

Did that deaf person teach you sign language?
 
No, he did not since I taught first grade at the time. Then he moved to the Dubard School in Hattiesburg, MS. I took a course offered at my church in and I stuck with it. I really enjoyed it! Since then, I've been to a course at a local deaf center and am learning from other interpretors and deaf ladies at church.

Oh so he was an ASL user with a terp?
 
Yes, but it was an inclusion class. He had a cochlea implant that was helping some. The 'terp' would come in at certain times and would help him if needed. But he soon moved away and I didn't get a chance to know him and also learn from him and sp.ed. teacher. Since I've been teaching, he's the only child I've had that was deaf. I've helped in Sunday School with children on occasion, but that's it. I'm hoping to teach basic signs to my preschool children at school. I have two that don't talk yet. What do you think?

I am a Deaf Ed teacher. I am deaf myself and was raised mainstreamed. I strongly believe that ASL should be the language of instruction for deaf children due to its accessibility for them that spoken English doesnt have. Then, learn English as a 2nd language. I was just curious about this child because so many people claim that children with CIs dont need sign language but I am seeing so many of them come to my program so far behind because they didnt have full access to the curriculm at their mainstreamed programs. It is something that I feel strongly about.

However, I think that's great that you are willing to learn some basic signs but those children need a full model of ASL to really develop like their hearing peers.

Those two that dont talk..are they hearing or deaf?

I have a hearing class and the two that don't talk are hearing as well. As a matter of fact, one was tested recently and he passed. He did have fluid behind his ears and had tubes put in about 3 weeks ago.
I'm glad you are teaching and believe the way you do. When I had this child in first grade, it was in 2001 I think. I don't know how he turned out at the Dubard school, but I know the school was good for language disorders, etc.
As for myself personally, there are classes offered at Bishop State, but I'm not sure what class I need to get into. Would it be good to work on reverse translating? I admit, I do need practice with that. I do sit in the deaf section at church after I either play in the orchestra or sign the songs, so I watch every week.
