Hello everyone. I lost all my hearing in my right ear three years ago and my left ear is slowly going deaf as well. I've just started learning sign language. It would be nice to chat with people who know what my life is like, some of the day to day challenges that I am facing and will face. Making some friends would be cool too.
 
All sorts. I read sci-fi, fantasy, some popular fiction, historical fiction, a few non-fiction. I stay away from romance novels and anything that might give me nightmares :)
I also sell leather bound books in foreign languages for collectors, or for decoration. are you a reader?

I sure do. I read some sci-fi and mostly history, science, and some economics.

Are you a bookstore owner then? That's pretty cool. :)
 
Yeah, I love my books. I also have my RN, but since I can no longer hear a heartbeat, breath sounds, or which direction sounds are coming from, I wouldn't be the best caregiver. Going back to school for Health Informatics. Something I can do if/when the rest of my hearing disappears.

That's too bad. Have you tried amplified stethoscopes? I think there are some made for hard of hearing folks.

What is health informatics about?
 
I have heard of the amplified stethoscopes, but I have the whole directional problem. I can hear you, sorta, but I have no idea where you are. I was really lucky and got tinnitus and migraines with my hearing loss, so I have to try to hear over the constant buzzing in my head. Extremely annoying. Sarcasm has become my friend the last few years, in case you were wondering.

Health informatics are IT people who work with medical staff with computerized charting, electronic medical records, etc. So I will do this and my book business

Sarcasm has its uses, doesn't it? ;) I don't envy the constant tinnitus... I'm merely severe-to-profound deaf/hoh. I do get it once in a while though in one ear if I'm wearing a hearing aid for too long, but I have not had it constantly.

Interesting. I didn't know there was a specific medical branch to IT.

I'm completing my CSS AAS degree in about a year. I hope to find work in system administration / networking. Good luck with your studies! :)
