Hello community,

My name's Tom. I'm hearing. I've always been fascinated by ASL and this semester at school took a sign class and am loving it. I hope to continue learning ASL and about Deaf culture after my course is over, so I thought I'd register.

I'm 21 and live in New Jersey. I'm a filmmaker/photographer, and I do a great deal of traveling and capturing things through my lenses. Most recently, I spent this last weekend in Dominican Republic shooting a commercial for a children's charity.

Well enough about me.... how are all of YOU doing??:wave::wave:

I'm just great. Have fun reading the threads in our forum. :)

Hey Tom..I got a question to ask you. Are those recently new reality shows stereotyping people who live in NJ?

Thank you for the warm welcoming, all. I'm assuming you're talking about Jersey Shore, shel hahaha. There is a very small part of people from New Jersey who actually do grease up their hair, get orange sun tans, and pump their fists like there's no tomorrow. Most of us not, but sadly there are some.

LOl...I have a Coworker who proudly displays a sticker on her car that says "JS....Jersey Girl"

I have gotten glimpses of those reality shows about life in Jersey...like "jersey Shore, jerseylicous or whatever...and I am like "eeek"...lol

A desert rat here (from AZ) . :)

NJ is quite a state. Dirty Jersey mannnnnnn. I quite like your Las Vegas you got though :) I've lost plenty of green to that city.

No longer a desert rat...I live in Oriole Country now. Been here for the past 11 years. Grew up in Phx, AZ...not in Vegas. heh

I love Vegas, though. :)

Hi

Hi Tom, welcome to AD. It's funny about the whole JS thing, I have a friend who lives in New Jersey and she HATES that show..she says that get invaded every summer by idiots like these..and then she said something about a snipers rifle and finding the nearest water tower...or maybe the relay op got it wrong! lol! :laugh2: My 22 yr dtr actually went as Snooki for Halloween....That has got to be surreal...I'm not really sure that I wouldn't be weirded out by the fact that people actually pretend to be me, not some character in a movie that I played, but just ME! Even funnier if your CDN as I'll guarantee to have that level of tan in Canada in October involves many trips to the spray tan booth...
Take care
Staci

Me too.

Plus, I don't think Tom even came back since his first day.

I am also from NJ. Seems most of what you see on TV about NJ focuses on North Jersey, and particularly that ugly industrial area just outside of NYC, and the stereotypical Jersey types that hail from that area - though there ARE normal people in that area too.

NJ is a beautiful and diverse state, and my goodness, we even have lakes and woods and wild open spaces here. Eastern North Jersey is very congested, due to being a suburb of NYC, but Western north Jersey is a beautiful area with mountains and much less crowded. Southern NJ has it's relatively crowded area that is outside of and considered a suburb of Philadelphia, but down here we also have the huge Pine Barrens, and so much farmland you wouldn't believe...remember, NJ is called the Garden State. We have many charming historical towns, and the Jersey Shore is the best!! with very few beach towns being like the one's portrayed on TV, which many people in NJ stay away from, for obvious reasons. I grew up right on the edge of the Pine Barrens, in a rural area, camping and canoeing my way thru my childhood, with the beach less than an hour away. It was great, and with Philadelphia, New York, and Washington DC all within a few hours drive, if we wanted to see the city or the mountains, it was right there.

Lastly, we girls don't all have high hair and fake nails and that horrible "Jersey" accent, (Though I will admit, I had high hair and fake nails in the 80's) and we are not all Italian, though there are a lot of Italians in NJ. There are a lot of Italians in the northeast in general.

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum! :)

Off-topic... Botts, maybe Tom is away for the holidays. :dunno:

Happy Holidays,
Sosie
