Hello all,

Thought I'd say hello to you all after browsing the forum for a while -hopefully I'm in the right place but happy to forwarded on as need be.

OK, where to start.... firstly, I'm not deaf myself, my brother is, and it for his concern I am joining the forum:

Joe is now 46 and was born with CRS, Congenital Rubella Syndrome. He is almost totally deaf and his eyesight is becoming poor also. He can hear loud noises through one ear with the use of a hearing aid.

I am trying to find out about cochlear implants or any other surgery that might be appropiate for my brother. He has looked into surgery in the past and not had it, I think due to possibly unsuitablity but unsure: this was probably 10 or more years a go, but perhaps things have changed since then? I really just want to explore any other possiblilites, and would consider raising funds to have it done privately if there was something that could be done, if it was not possible on the NHS. I have not spoken to my brother about this as he was severly dissapointed in the past with being told he couldn't have it done, so I am making enquiries to see if there is anything that can be done.

I appreciate no one can diagnose, but just hear if there is any hope.

Phatjap, welcome to the site, I am also from england. I have Cochlear Implant.

My question is any idea why he was turned down before??

Anyway,

In Uk there is guidelines where Adults with profound deafness (with working Auditory nerve and cochlea) need be assessed and providing they are candiate can have a CI funded by PCT. To make start your brother would need to get referal from his ENT Doctor. It can take weeks perhaps months. Since his vision is getting poorer, now is better than never.

Any questions just ask.

Hello Overthepond,

Thank you for your reply.

That's the difficulty, finding out why he was turned down as I do know he has been dissapointed in the past with this but as our mother died last year, it makes it a little tricky not having anyone else to ask, but him. Currently I'm at a loss to be honest as I can't make contact with his Dr. without his consent and therfore alerting him to potential hope - where indeed there may be none.

Anyway, I'd be glad for any opinions, although I'm aware that it probably means talking to him about it, something I've never done....

Any feedback would be great in this....

Regards.
