I'm looking into jobs in Boston or southern Florida...especially in consulting or business since those tend to pay their interns very well, compared to working in science labs.

Unfortunately, my stepmom does =/ Don't ask. Story is too long and complicated...but I am thinking about starting to establish my own independence and moving away from my parents.....I just need to find a way and how, including thinking about an online start-up business and renting my own place...but it's harder than you think. =/

you'd be surprised. I've been there, done that.

The reason I asked is because if either your parents are under a certain income, or you live n your own and file your own taxes - You can get support from the VR. The secret lies in choosing a career you're going towards and tell the VR that, and tell them the only way you can achieve it is if you finish MIT.

Also while filling out the papers tell the VR the "higher" end of expected $ an hour you're "needing" to live out of school... :)

That is like if your job will pay around $85,000 a year being a MIT student/instead of $50,000 at else where... Tell them that you need 85000 and can't meet it at any other schools...

Wow, good suggestion! I only heard about VR from someone else just few days ago. I will consider this option, thanks. But it may not work because of the parents' income criteria, but we'll see about the independence part. (I looked up the independence criteria for financial aid online...it seems like the requirements are very tough. If I have everything else on my own, but still rely on my parents for insurance coverage, then fin aid will see me as dependent no matter what, I think).
