I am a 58 year old woman (happily married):aw: I own and operate a women's wilderness camp. I live an isolated life - most of the time. My partner works in another part of the country - he travels here often. However, I am alone in the forest for many months of the year, which is good for me.:D

I am looking for 'friends' to correspond with. I have been hearing impaired since I was a child - through childhood trauma. My hearing has become increasingly impaired as I age - common for everyone - more so for those who already have an impairment. I am currently learning finger spelling and ASL so that I will be able to communicate effectively with my grandson.

I enjoy hiking, running, cross country skiing, roller blading and most physical activities. I live a labour intensive lifestyle, harvesting and chopping my own firewood, hauling drinking water and moving copious amounts of snow. I am a writer, an avid reader and a woodworker. I have been a human rights activist for all of my adult life. My education is in political science/social justice/human rights.

fingerspelling

thank you - it is difficult to find the discipline to learn finger spelling alone - my dog and cat are not interested - the wildlife and birds move to quickly - thank you - you made me practice.:ty:

:wave:Welcome to AD, hopeyou really enjoy your vissits here! I grew up in the country where I could ride up the mountain on my bicycle when I was eight and fish whenever I want, and when friends go I could camp at favorite sites and play in the river and shoot BB guns without parents worry about us. As teen move to city and really hate it then and now, I always wish I could ge away and linvein the wild simular to your situation. Still hunt and fish when I can but it's not the same as living in total piece of nature, to see the beauty and enjoy the outdoors even with the extensive labor that one must fexperience to survive the harsh conditions at times. Well I would love to her about your experiences anytime, I love the outdoors, stop by my page and say hello.:cool2:

life in the wilderness

thank you for your response ArtLife - yes living in the wilderness is amazing; even with all the work. I enjoy my time here - watching the wildlife and birds. I do not hunt or fish - I am a vegetarian. I have deer, bears, moose, coyotes, cougars, martens, foxes - and this winter, a wolverine - birds from hummingbirds to eagles and vultures.

It is wonderful to live where the animals think they own the place. I have a small forest orchard - cherries, apples, plums, saskatoon berries...the animals always get to the fruit before I can. Although I live here all year round, the camp is only open during the no snow months - for camping. There is day use in the winter - cross country ski trails and snow shoe trails. I am a personal trainer so I also offer nutritional counselling and structured exercise.

Since you love the country do you ever get to enjoy it anymore? Do you still go camping, hunting and fishing? Are you deaf or hearing impaired? Does this hinder your abilities in the wilderness? At first I found it quite daunting - not being able to hear what was going on around me - but I have adjusted quite well. I have a hearing dog - I am in the process of training her now - she so far can signal that a vehicle has accessed the property or that the telephone is ringing. Important signals for me. She will learn more - I am certain.

take care, thanks for responding, hope to hear from you again

Thanks for the heads up on the womens own adventure site - it is quite interesting. Because of my work I am pretty much limited to travel in our (Canada) winter - which is summer in Australia. I am definitely interested in such activities. This summer I am hiking the West Coast Trail - which is in the Pacific Rim Park on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is a 76 kms wilderness hike - up and down ravines - along the ocean - I am really looking forward to it - the second week of August. In July I am going on a two day white water rafting excursion - about an hour from my place - it should be quite thrilling - I will also get to see grizzly bears during that excursion - from a safe distance (if there is such a thing).

I love to challenge my body and my spirit - the older I get the more I want to engage in activities which make me feel alive, strong and adventurous.

again - thanks for the suggestion - hope you keep in touch.

my 'job'

Thank you for your welcome. I am new to this site - so far I am enjoying it. Talking to others about all sorts of topics.

Yes, my job is 'cool'. I decided when I was six years old (many years ago) that this is what I wanted to do. For many years I was a human rights activist - living in the city - nurturing my little family. Family is grown, life partner still very much involved in his career (in the city 3500kms away) - this is my new career and way of life.

I feel so very fortunate to live and work the way I do. Although there are downsides - isolation - separation from my life partner for long periods of time - immense amount of work - my hearing impairment (although I have a helper dog) - but I do love it here.

PEACE:lol:

I spent 35 years living in 'flat' land in southwestern Ontario, Canada - nurturing my little family - when the kids were all grown I headed for the mountains and forests. I love it here.

I have not been to the US since the early 1970's - my human rights work has prevented me from crossing the border. That will soon end - and I hope to do some serious travelling in the US. There are so many amazing things to see.

have a good day.

PEACE

:welcome: to AD! Ilove the wilderness and always dreamed of living in a cabin in the middle of the wilderness. :) I do love city life too so it would put me between a rock and a hard place.
