My name is Sophia and Iam currently in a Deaf Culture and Community class-I have seen many reactions to posted survey questions and thats not why I joined. Being in this class made me realize the suffering Deaf and HOH individuals go through. To be honest, Iam curiously concerned. I dont know where I will go from here but what I wanted to know is what Deaf and HOH individuals think of the word Audism? It is a newly discovered word for me that has so much meaning. I was wondering if its commonly used or referred to? I didnt see anything in the forums that discussed it. Feel free to answer, if not thats perfectly ok with me. Have a great day everyone!

Audism- is speaking as far as I know. I would guess refers to all persons who speak vs persons who don't.Does one "split society into speaking and non-speaking/mute? persons" make real sense to you? My thoughts Sophia.

What?

Audism refers to discrimination, negative attitudes, oppression of people who are Hard of Hearing or d/Deaf ... by both hearing people - and in some cases even deaf people (hearing-in-the-head deaf etc)

Audism (as a definition) has nothing to do with is someone speaks or not, the communication methods they chose, languages they speak etc - although d/D/Hoh people do face discrimination regarding these aspects of our lives (from both hearing people and unfortunately even from other Hoh/d/Deaf.)

another term

Never heard of that term. Guess someone cooked up that term to sell their book

It was coined by a deaf man back in 1974 or 75 and I don't think it was in a book...still hasn't made it into the dictionary after all these years.

While we're at it, perhaps she ought to also be aware of the term "reverse audism". Just to show that it can also be a two way street.

I'm not suffering. My life is not a plight. Why in the world should you pity me? :dunno2:

No offense but PLEASE go educate yourself on a subject before you decide to comment on it.

I am going to say that your class should probably cover being tactful and not using terms that can be construed as offensive by deaf folks. Terms like disability and suffering. Here is some information on Audism that you might find helpful

Here is the definition as coined by Tom Humphries.

Oh, the agony!

Sophia, have you met deaf people? Please go to an ASL social or some other deaf event. Socializing with some hoh/deaf people will change your perceptions. And you'll have some fun. :D

In the bold statement, I typed audism and it has a pink wavy underline which indicate that there is no word in the dictionary. The word Audism or Audist should be in the dictionary regardless. :hmm:

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum, foxysophia1. Well, you will learn a lot about us with our deaf or hard of hearing experiences. So have fun reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.

in all fairness her class is probably focusing on the time period from like 1000 B.C. to about the 1500's ...

Saw someone else make a comment on the bolded part. My thinking: most of the suffering comes from being discriminated against, harassed, ignored, and a whole lot of other things. Not hearing well is the least of the problems.
