Hearing Girl Who Wants To Make Deaf Friends(:

Thailand and Cambodia. I've been to Thailand and really like the culture and the country and I've always wanted to volunteer in an outreach program after learning rural famllies are too poor to send their deaf kids to school (mainstream or deaf). Cambodia has a fantastic school for the Deaf so I would like to go there as well and learn what made it such a success. Apparently it's one of the best schools in the country.

that sounds awesome... thailand and cambodia are 2 places i've never been but i was born and have lots of family in other parts of asia :)

Im a hearing girl as well, and I've already made a few Deaf friends on this forum so you girls are in for a treat! Hope to see you around :)

Saw that your location is Trinidad.. Trini Massive! Just wanted to shout you out.

I'm a hearing person as well who is interested in Deaf culture. I haven't found anything in my town so I joined here to become familiar with terms/culture/what-nots. I'm also self teaching asl to myself at the moment through lifeprint.com. My biggest worry with self teaching is getting the grammar/facial expressions down, I don't want to embarrass myself when I get the chance to actually use it.

HI!!!!!!!!!!
I'm hearing, but both my parents are deaf. I'm not very knowledgeable of the deaf community because most of my years growing up, I avoided my parents. But I'm willing to help with what I know of the deaf culture and the deaf community.

No judgement here but I'm curious why you avoided them?

My son was being rebelled when he was younger. I communicated with him in ASL. He refused to sign outside of the home like in public places. At home he is comfortable signing with me. I don't know if he knew much about the Deaf community. I don't remember if I had taught him about the Deaf Culture. That was many years ago. Now he is in his middle 30 years old.

Like DeafCarolina, what make you avoid deaf parents? :hmm: :cool2:

:welcome: to AllDeaf forum. Have fun reading and posting all the threads here. See you around here.

Ha, fair question.

I asked because I'm a deaf parent of hearing children so I wanted to learn more because maybe it'll help me understand my sons better. They rebelled too sometimes in other ways.

I was brought up to avoid deaf people. Then at age 18, tried to reach out to them when I got a job as camp counsellor for a day camp for deaf kids. That didn't go well.
So, I didn't try again and then circumstances in my life, raising two kids on my own, school, work etc kept me busy for a long time and now, here I am.

Hey, I'm also a hearing girl looking to make friends in the D/deaf community. :)

babseball boy i agree being deaf does suck....at least for me. id give my left nut to hear properly but my implant is the closest ill get to "normal" hearing and im in the same situation. Ive been told i dont sound deaf i just have a bit of a lisp... girls usually only find out i have an implant when we hook up and they start grabbing my hair....but most of the time ill just sneak that sucker into my pocket and have a fun night aha

Ahahaha to funny i do that same thing. Then i run off to the washroom after im done and put it on then go back for cuddles or w.e. Cheers dude!

Hey! I'm also hearing looking to become involved in the deaf culture and make friends :D
