Hi,

I have been wanting to sign for some time now, seeing it as another form of communication which is very interesting to witness.

Quick Q.

Is it odd that I feel attracted to the idea of dating a deaf gentleman? I have no idea why I have this compulsion, however I would like to give it a try.

I know very minimal sign language and am learning to sign Auslan.

Can this subject touch on the preference of a mate between cultures & race (ie: Russian woman, Australian man).

Or is it the fact that it is "unusual"?

I have read a few interesting posts on this subject on here and found the theme to dating is the attraction between two people.

One more thing, I have noticed that sign language includes a lot of body language. This is what I find very intriguing as opposed to verbalising something and perhaps not meaning it.

I thoroughly enjoy subliminal interaction – body language etc. (it is clear this is one reason why I would like to try).

A lot can be said without verbalising in other words.

Any suggestions/ comments?

Thank you & good day!

Polly

Learn ASL, then impress the deaf guy with your knowledge of ASL instead of asking them to teach you.

Is there a particular deaf guy that you are interested in, or are you saying you want to find a deaf person to date?

First, Polly, please don't come to a Deaf forum and throw around acronyms as though we, me in particular, are supposed to understand hearie slang (ie: Quick Q???).

Second, I didn't read long before I feel like you want Deaf man for pet. For trophy. That's not very appealing and I would suggest you read "What Ticks You Off (Most) About Hearies? thread.

Quick Q - Quick Question. I think that's more internet slang than hearing slang. I've never heard that as a spoken phrase.

I am in a relationship with a man who happens to be deaf. I have been studying ASL for a while before meeting him. I was probably around a level 2 a month ago, but my ASL has been improving rapidly the more time I spend around him. He has a lot of patience with me as I ask him to say something again. I appreciate that. He has 20% hearing in one ear, but I never ask him to use his voice instead of signing. The only time he uses his voice is when he wants to get my attention and I am out of sight... My family is even wanting to learn sign so they can talk with my boyfriend, which means a great deal to me. The weirdest part is...I never feel like I am talking in a language other than vocal English...it seems natural for me to have full conversations without using my voice, and I like that feeling...the feeling of never thinking about me being hearing and him being deaf. Even when I interpret things for him between people...it just seems...normal, I guess...Like nothing is different...that we are all sitting around having a conversation. It's a great feeling. I think the greatest thing I love in the relationship is who he is as a person...Kind, loving, affectionate, patient, and honest. It never came down to how we communicate. LOL...I have been in relationships before with hearing people and their ability to communicate was null. My boyfriend loves socializing, so our communication is strong even with my little knowledge of Sign. Look for someone who is good to you, for you...and someone you are good to and for...Don't look for someone based on their physical attributes...whether they be blind, deaf, mute, hearing, seeing, have seventeen fingers, or have gold eyes...it's silly.

I think you are very quick to get defensive there Rebecca.

I know exactly how she feels - with this compulsion - I have an interest in Martial Arts and spent so much time watching martial art movies that I'm quite partial to Asian men.

I don't wish to have them as a toy, but there is some intriguing anbout an asian or half asian man.

Saying that I never have dated an asian man - I'm alas, quite tall for a girl (5'9") and on average, Asian men are shorter.

We have something in common, Kalima01....:D...too bad Chow Yun Fat is married. He's 6 ft tall....that's a giant compared to most actors working in the action cinema industry in Asia.

Getting a partner who speaks the target language is one way to learn quick, but the problem then becomes: what happens when you want to learn a different language?

love knows no boundaries. Either you you both clicked in or you dont regardless of communication. But everyone knows that a good communication is the key for long lasting relationship.

Wirelessly posted

Best advice, don't let anyone interfere with your relationship especially his friends or any busy body wishing to break you and him apart. The relationship is between you and him not the rest of world. Best wishes to you!
