I'm a hearing college student studying Deaf Culture and ASL. I'm loving the culture and language the more I learn about it. For my Deaf Culture class I need to ask 10 questions for an interview, would anyone be interested in the interview using Skype? It'd be great practice for my signing, I'm in level 3 and don't have any deaf friends so I need all the practice I can get!

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this
:]

You should think twice, and get to know the people in the forum first..then come and ask them if they want to be interviewed.. this happens a little too often.

I've vaguely aware of P3, but I believe it's something I should invest in and download.

I was not trying to be too forward or anything in asking for an interview.. I'm just trying to be friendly. I feel bad if I'm coming off the wrong way.

Would it be alright if I were to post the questions here instead of a videochat? I'd appreciate if anyone would like to answer them..

1. What is your family's communication background?

2. How do you prefer to communicate? Sign or speak with hearing aid?

3. What is your educational background?

4. If applicable, what was your first use of ASL?

5. Community- Do you feel apart of deaf community or hearing?

6. Have you had any work related communication problems in the past?

7. Do you have any stories of being treated differently because you are deaf?

1. What is your family's communication background?
They were all hearing. They spoke.

2. How do you prefer to communicate? Sign or speak with hearing aid?
Currently I am between worlds, having lost my hearing as an adult. That means I am bad at listening, and bad at ASL. Hoping to improve with ASL. No chance with listening improvement.

3. What is your educational background?
Some post secondary school. I learned COBOL, Fortran, Basic and RPG. Look it up. :giggle:

4. If applicable, what was your first use of ASL?
Learning it.

5. Community- Do you feel apart of deaf community or hearing?
I am between worlds, accepted partially by both, rejected partially by both. There is about 10% of deafs that refuse me, and about 20% of hearing. YMMV

6. Have you had any work related communication problems in the past?
Certainly, as well as inhibited advancement opportunities and job offers.

7. Do you have any stories of being treated differently because you are deaf?Hmmm...having people want to interview me because I am different; being mocked in public because I struggle to understand speech; having to watch TV without understanding what is said. The list is much larger, but I am giving you the 2 minute version.
You forgot the last 3 questions. Let me see if I can figure them out...

8. Should a child be made to wear a CI?
I do not feel they should, but I am not a parent of a deaf/HOH child. My views may change if I need to make this decision. I prefer to bow out of this type of debate.

9. What could hearing people do to make deaf feel more comfortable?
You could treat them as you would anyone else, but with a few extra steps, such as looking at them when you speak, patience, perhaps writing if there is no other way. And keep learning ASL.

10. I give up. Cannot think of another question...

Guess this thread was forgotten...where is the student? Class dismissed?
