Exactly. It would be great if hearing aid companies would "listen" more to their users instead of trying to decide what they want or do not want as certain features in their hearing aids. When I received my first pair of digital aids in 1995, my audi enabled the compression feature which I found muted too much noise and made speech impossible to understand. Once it was turned off, I found that I could hear much better -- especially when it came to environmental sounds. Unfortunately, it didn't help me understand speech, but in my case, digitals were wonderful for hearing environmental sounds.

This is one of the reasons why I chose to get CIs. I couldn't understand speech in quiet either, but background noise was also a challenge. Hearing in background noise tends to be one of the major drawbacks to hearing aids and generally people with milder losses (meaning mild or mild-moderate) are able to function better in these environments than those with more severe losses. It would be nice if hearing aid manufacturers could come up with a program that allows the user to automatically adjust how much background noise they would like to hear.

the word 'function' reeks of ablism, functionalism (old fashioned social theory which im not going to discussed here), it implys that we have to somehow have to have perfect or near-perfect hearing to be 'equalled' in the world where intolerance of difference are condoned.

:roll: Sorry, but she used the term correctly. She mentioned that she got a CI to hear speech better. What you think how she should be saying something is irrelevant. One can find offense with just about anything...which gets us into these inane pontifications...
