Hear and Now

A deeply personal memoir by Emmy® winner Irene Taylor Brodsky, HEAR AND NOW chronicles her deaf parents' decision to undergo risky cochlear implant surgery, following their touching journey from a comfortable marriage of silence into a new, complex and challenging world of sound. Winner of an Audience Award at last year's Sundance Film Festival. Read more.

I watched this documentary last week. It was very interesting and moving.

Has anyone else seen it? If so, what do you think of it?

Cheers.

I have seen it,I felt so bad for the wife that I was crying,I felt so bad for her.:(

This has the potential to start a heated discussion here.

I watched the documentary also. I'm hearing, so I watched it with alot of interest. I, too, felt for the woman. I think one of the lessons in the documentary was one of expectations.

Nobody really knew what either of them would hear, and so, the expectations of everyone involved needed to adjust accordingly. It sounded to me like pressure was placed on the couple to "hear this and hear that!", when I think people should realize that hearing with a cochlear implant takes time and practice. You don't just have the surgery and "Bam! You can hear everything!" It doesn't work like that.

Already two hearing strangers approached me because they saw the film and wanted to know how I felt about having my Cochlear Implant as they saw it on my head while we were all waiting in the line. They both told me that they saw the movie on HBO and became deeply affected and curious. The other time, I was in Las Vegas last week and I was in a casino playing slots and a lady had balls to come up to me to inquire about the movie and what I thought of it! But I am glad that this documentary is spreading education out there.

My nephew was in video production of this film so it has affected the entire family. The daughter of the couple lives here in Portland, Ore. She has a hard of hearing son. Imagine that!

I've only seen the last part of this documentary. I keep missing it on HBO. I should find a schedule of times so I can try to catch the whole thing sometime.

You have time. It's showing the entire month of June. If you want to, PM me and I'll give you the dates and times it'll be on.

Would that work? :)

I was really impressed with the "Hear and Now" documentary. It was heart felt and truly moving. I am profoundly deaf, wear a hearing aid in my left ear, but am a good lip reader so watch out! :)

Eh. Talking about cochlear implants always seems to start heated discussions on the forum! Is one more gonna hurt?

The last one I blundered into, I said something about being HOH. Got me a big lecture of "I'm deaf, You're deaf, We are all deaf, There is no HOH" not an exact quote, but I vowed after to try to stay out of anything deep.:-o:run: :ugh:

Ugh! I hear you. That's too bad. You should be able to identify however you wish; without someone telling you that you must adhere to their standard of "deaf", or "Deaf".

It's ok. I am kind of a silly person who never gets too serious anyway.(Technically, I am a deaf person who used to be HOH)

yah i saw that movie the other day, it was pretty good, and interesting to see how an older couple go thru it and stuff.

I want to see this movie but I do not have HBO. Fortunately, my friend is going to tape this movie the next time it shows on HBO, and then send the tape to me. :)
