I feel bad for older men who do not have gone college experience, or being single person, or not have real job, try friend with me. I want to know any of you know why it is really happen to see some older students here at gallaudet.

Older students are the traditional students now. Many, many reasons people don't attend college at the age of 18. And maybe some did, and are back for an additional degree.

Maybe they had no money. Or different priorities.

Maybe they lost their jobs in the bad economy and want further training.

it's a huge trend right now. We have a surge in graduate applications. This bad period of economy is actually the best time for people to go to business grad school. Many colleges have reported a surge in graduate applications as well.... relating to business major.

oh, really, i didnt know that. You said older students are traditional at gallaudet. What other colleges, dont they have older students at public or private college? Arent they accept older students unless meet requirement or else like strict at state or univ. required older must have meet their requirement course or some order to community college before go college. Are embrassed to see older students at college in other country or like hearing college here?

I know many young students at other college that meet their expectations unless embrassed if they dont go college or drop college, cuz they would like to social with pattern age, if older students, find way to college for area, is really way in America or other countries or Japan or UK?

they are not embarrassed at all. I am referring to all other colleges. Many people are going to grad school or going back to college to get college diploma. Most of older students attend classes at evening and in grad program - the classes are reserved for grad students so no you're not going to find young undergrads in it. There is no age requirement to go to college. All you have to do is meet its admission requirements and that's all.

Yeah I am with Jiro on this.
nat84, I am a current student who is going back to college even after I already got a Bachelor's degree 3 years ago. Part of it is due to the economy, part of it is due to because I found out what I was doing before wasn't what I wanted to do.

I have seen some older people in my class, especially my friend spoke of one situation in her class - she is going to medschool and is 2 years away from getting a Master's in Clinical Pharmacy. She said that in one of her medical classes, there is an old guy who is about 60 years old in a classroom of students aged 25-30. And the guy spoke up before, he is a car mechanic.

As long as you want to study - whats there holding you back if you are serious, it is not a problem really. I have seen back when I was a Computer Science major, many older people aged 50+ sitting in my class. My thoughts were the same as you. "What are these people doing here?"
Then I learned everyone wants to study. No problem with that.

I finished college 16 years ago. I'm back in college in an IT program. Not only would I like to be able to list that to my resume, I can also add the education I already have, plus 15 years' working experience. Hopefully I will end up with a really good paying job!

You will certainly be well qualified. Do you find that the 15 years work experience, plus your life experience gives you the ability to apply what you are learning in class easier? Like making connections between two things that seem to be unrelated?

okay. I understand you, Naisho. Are you from Asia or America, I noticed your japanese language, are you in strong faith with education means you would continue your education all of your life?

It is compare between Asia and America. In America, there is more freedom for everyone make choice and decision. Everytime, you seen older students who were in classroom with students age 18-25, it is more acceptable depend on college but it never say age reqiurement or else. They do not have forced by parents to go college because they have a choice what they want. In Asia, it is rarely to see older students who is around, often, students always finish high school, head to 4 year college before they can do anything or free time their lives. It is very traditional and education values, parents of students would not like students have do nothing if not go college, want go college it doesnt matter if they have no good skill or else. If they do not go college, parents or any else not allow them to get job or anything.

I am of Chinese + Korean background and studied 2 courses of Japanese when I was younger. But I am born from the US.

You have most of that view correct. I do not think I will be in education for the rest of my life.. I think the reason I am going this time is because I want to learn something I did not learn last time I was there.

What I learn now is going to affect my future job choice also. In Asia, countries, it seems that once you are old enough (20+) once you start working you start that cycle you never stop. Parents don't like it if the child does nothing for life except play or waste time. It is natural custom that they must "support" the home.

In America, it's different. We are much more "radical to change" I think is the word. People are willing to stand up for what they believe and what they see in.

With that - much of Asia it is hard to work your way up because the countries are so big. Every person has to work their way from the bottom or earn some recognition from somewhere. But those Asian students that are from the USA or born of the USA who go back - are treated a little differently at this point in time. Because of our English influence, it affects and helps the job choices there provided that you can speak the language from bilingualism.

oh I know lots of older people decide to return to ANY colleges lately, in order to get degrees and get better jobs. I don't see anything wrong with it. i am so happy to know lots of older people returning to school. In their times, they may not have enough $$ for colleges or they were unsure what they would like to with until they had to experenice through working then they know what they wanted for.

You can always learn something from the experienced people that gives you some ideas what to do with your life for your future.

Learning is a life-long experience.

:giggle: I totally agreeeeee! Back in my class, one of my classmate was 20 years older than i am. He got A+ annd I got D. He's a real cool! last time i heard that he got a good job. im happy for him.

My mother in law graduated PhD at 52 years old. No matter any ages are more than welcome to any Universities. My mother graduated in Master degree when she was 48 years old. I graduated college at 42 years old.

Are you discriminating at age ?

I went to visit my sister in College, I met two elders who married to each other, they are in their 60's and they went to college to just keeping them busy... They said that retired is sooo bored, why not go to college to keeping them busy to enjoy and learning new stuffs.

Also, one of my best friends' grandma graudated from MSU when she was 82 years old. She's working at College Library right now, now she's 85 years old and strong like an OX.

Absolutely. I'm very dedicated to my class. I've gotten all my homework completed ahead of schedule. (It's all online which makes it an interesting process and some getting used to - none of that existed 16-20 years ago!) And I was so well prepared for both tests I've already had (one a week) that I aced both. I find my mindset is really different - dedicated - now than from when I was in college 20 years ago.
