Well, mine's kind of a long story....here goes:
I was driving home from work in my SUV, and then I came on a high rise bridge. I realized I was out of gas and the car slowed down to a stop so I had to pull over on to the side of the bridge so the traffic can go pass me. I called my mother and told her I am out of gas so she said she will get gas in a can and bring it to me. She also told me if a cop is there, tell him that I am waiting for her. I said Ok and hung up...then I waited for a while until I saw blue lights flashing behind me in my rearview mirror. I rolled down the window and saw the officer coming to me, so I told him that I am waiting for my mother to bring me gas. I guess he didn't want to wait so he said there is a gas station down after the bridge so he will PUSH me to there. I said ok (since I have to obey the officer), so he told me to put my car in neutral and had his police crusier pushing my SUV up, up to the bridge until the very top of the bridge (everyone stayed out of our way on the bridge!). Meanwhile, I saw my mother driving past me so she went down to the gas station to wait for us.
Ok, remember I had no gas in my car so the steering wheel and brakes won't work. Even my Dad who is a mechanic said cars like mine don't work when there is no gas. Well, when we got to the top of the bridge (there is a decline down the bridge)...I felt my car moving by itself but I wasn't pressing the gas pedal. I noticed that my car is going faster and faster so I tried to step on the brakes but it didn't work! The miracle here is that usually there was 4 lanes filled up on that side, but on that day only one lane was empty...so my car went on that lane and it wouldn't stop at all. Then it hit a smaller car which made it spin around on the road. My vehicle finally came to a stop on the grass on the side of the road. I have never been so terrified in my life!! I was crying....the officer came to me and said Why didn't you stop?! I told him the brakes didn't work I tried to stop! Mom ran over to me and tried to console me because I was crying. The officer then said, "I should've called a tow truck!" Then he said, "Nancy, you didn't do anything wrong, I am in trouble for this." He said it to both Mom and I.
Meanwhile, the other people I hit were walking around their car that was damaged....I heard later that a nurse overheard them wanting to sue to make money (she is a witness of the accident). Then one of them came over to us and said he will sue me, the police department. Then I noticed an ambulance came over and carried an older man to the hospital (he was walking around earlier). The police officer heard them said on a cell phone someone is going to eat shit and die.
Later, Mom came over to the police department and he and the officer talked...he said he didn't want to charge me for the accident but the police department wanted to because they are afraid I would sue. He also said they had a new rule of no more pushing cars. Mom was mad that they had written some false info on the cop's witness paper of the accident (probably to save their butts) and said I am their scapegoat. Another officer called Mom and shoot her out for writing to their cheif, and said the charges will stand. Mom said that they will get a lawyer then...and the guy shut up.
We had a lawyer who laughed and said he can see the judge that I am going to have looking over his glasses at the cop who said he pushed me over a bridge. On courtday, sure enough the judge did just that including the court secretaries. They all looked at the officer really funny. I found out that my charges were dropped, but he said I am at fault for not having gas, but the officer is also at fault for pushing me over a bridge.
The other people in the accident sued both the police department and I....so my auto insurance took care of it....and I haven't heard anymore from them. I don't know about the police department but I read in the newspaper about "the stranded motorist" and that they were suing the department.
I am so glad this nightmare was over, and the charges were dropped. I had to obey the officer....but I tried to tell him that my mother was getting gas. Oh well....
