I am asking for those who have traveled on this train before...and share this experience with me. I am going to see a friend of mine named Amanda from Feb. 26th to March 4th. I will be leaving 8 am then arrive in Chicago at 10 am. It will be my first time on train and also I will be alone. I have never traveled alone ...always with someone. Jeremy will be working first shift but his sister Jessie will babysit our kids until he gets off from work.

Have anyone traveled alone on this train? Will I be safe? :/ Any advices, suggestions and tips for me? :ty:

I've never been on a train before, but have a great time in Chicago! ;)

Other than to be sure you have a good 'hold' on your ticket, just sit back and relax and enjoy the scenery flashing by! Good luck and have a good time too! ;)

Its a pretty safe way to travel...just take the usual precautions like not leaving luggage unattended and being aware of your surroundings. Traveling by train for me is exciting because I love trains and love to travel...its a way to see America from the backyards and not the roads (since trains usually travel behind peoples houses, etc). I have had people tell me that they find train travel to be boring, but I've always loved it.

I have travelled alone on Amtrak train about 3 times and I must say it was way better than Greyhound bus. I enjoyed the scenery from the train and I am sure you will too. Go for it with the train and then you will see afterwards whether or not you like it. Have fun in Chicago :)

You'll be fine as long as you keep alert
what's going on around you.

Because my sister in law took Amtrak
toward NYC,
she fell asleep being very Blonde and
then when she got out of the train
few hours later she discovered that
her wallet was stolen from her knapsnack
while she was sleeping in the train...
She quickly called these credit cards companies
discovering that someone already maxed out
her credit cards in NYC area
on a huge shopping spree !!

Next time if I take the Amtrak I would be
sure to hide my purse under my arm if
I need any catnap.

Just use your Common Sense and Enjoy !

I've never traveled by train. I have a couple friends who traveled by train cuz it was cheaper. I don't really care. I prefer to go by plane. ;)

I never go on the Amtrak Train alone, I did go on that train with Fei Ku, have to hold everything to you since it will be safe and alert with strangers. But I bet you will be doing fine for sure! enjoy your trip to Chicago! :thumb:

Never been on the train before!! - New experience for you!!!

I recommend to buy a belt bag to put your personal things in there for your safety.

Make sure your not alone in the train-tram etc, find a seat next to a couple.

Have a safe and happy journey.

P.S - Do not lose your train ticket!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I used Amtrak all the time. They are safe. I sit back to relax and watch ppl walking up and down on the aisle or watch ppl to get on or off the train.

The most important is to keep your eyes on ur travel bags. Make sure your bags are zip really good or have a tiny lock to lock the bags. Also Keep check every half an hour. If you want to sit by the window, keep your purse by the window or put it between your legs. Either way is fine.

I've been there a few times. It was really nice ridin'. There's also a small lounge downstairs for small snacks and beverages you can order. And, also you can get up and walk around in Amtrak. It's so much better than Greyhound, fyi. Good experience for you. Have fun ! :)

:eek2: Interesting to know that you never been on the train in your life...

I was on the train dozen of times... I love it because of stress-free... I feel relax and read the magazine, knit, crochect, look at train window etc...

I would recommend you to use something like knit, crochect, reading the book etc... if you are alone...

We alway leave car for train if we make our trips, etc.

Yea, that pretty much sums it up. Nothing to it. It is lots of fun as long as you are aware of what's going on around you. Just sit back and relax.

I have done a cross country trip from DC to Seattle and that was one of the best trips in my life. Got to see America from the East to West Coast...can't beat that!

i never ride train before... but i really wanna ride train someday... u will be allright

I have been on Amtrak many many many times, and that Cheri had rode on first time. Cheri find it very comfortable riding on Amtrak, didn't know she can stretch her legs and have her legs hang on the leg rest provided on every Amtrak. You could get pillow from pillow bin, they are free for you to borrow from. Very cute pillow, FYI. Generally each train car has at least 4 bathrooms, and average there is 6 cars, that means 24 bathrooms minimum... So you won't have to worry about waiting for somebody to do their business. On some routes, (Mostly western part) got scenetic floor where you can view with breathtaking. The best one is the Empire Builder. In fact I chose Amtrak over Greyhound when getting Cheri coming up here. For two reasons, comfortable and PRICE! So, if your deaf or have disability you need to call Amtrak toll free to get 10% discount. There is no discount online! I could get Amtrak ticket for almost half price of what Greyhound wants! The only problem is that Greyhound got better choices with schedule comparing to Amtrak only once a day, pffft.
You could "rent" a room from single to family size, all with except of smallest room got their own bathroom. It is like an hotel on the train. They DO have shower on lower deck! Some route got shower in each bedroom! It is 1st class, meaning you must pay for the regular coach fare PLUS that room. It don't come cheap, but the experience I had was awesome with my ex girlfriend. I once had sneak into that lower deck to take shower, thank god that conductor was in deep sleep and not realize what Im doing! LOL

Babykat -- ive been on the train several times -- its nice! u will be fine!!!

DO enjoy Chicago!!! :thumb:

yes i have been on the amtrak train. its not so bad at all. make sure u hold ur ticket when someone wants it. again when u're done with chicago make sure u go to guest services to help you to get on train because chicago has many many trains and u wouldn't know which train u would be going on. good luck and have fun in chicago. :)

No i never ride this one before but but i used ride greyhound many time for long time ago it's pain in ass!

I love Amtrak and it's a shame they severely cut routes and services.
Anyway, Amtrak is not necessarily the cheapest way to go. A few months ago a friend asked me to find her the cheapest way to get to Florida (from smack in the midwest), and I found out that round-trip, it would have cost about 800 dollars. YIKES! I finally got her round-trip airliner flights for about 150 dollars. Dang.
