My grandfather, JD Stacy (b. 1918 - d. 1999), served as a foot soldier in WWII. He has been all over Europe (Germany, Belgium, Japan, and France) fighting for the USA. He was a brave soldier who have seen many people killed, children starving over there, even his own friends were killed by enemies. I remember a story he told us about three men who were buried from the neck down (they were still alive). He saw it in hiding, and then saw the Germans blow the three men's brains out with guns. He was asked to volunteer, along with other men, to pick up bodies that were run over by army tanks, which he declined. He said other men had helped him in safety, which those men would have been killed for helping. He had risked his life fighting for freedom for the USA. I am very proud of him.

Ahhh...I was wondering why the city was placing flags along a street here yesterday...I've should have known!

I bet you are indeed proud of your grandpa Nancy! It's remarkable for the things he survived through yet at the same time watching his fellow comrades fall all around him....

To all of our veterans today, many thanks for serving our country and for those who have given their lives for this great country of ours in the wars they each were in!! Let's take a 'moment' of silence and honor those who have died and for those who are 'living' veterans-- *taking a moment here....*

REMEMBERING OUR HEROS, OUR SOLDIERS WHO VALIANTLY FOUGHT, HONORING THE FALLEN AND THE SURVIVORS!!

I wish we could truly honor them.
Slashing their medical care benefits is not the way to do it.

Now now...let's put aside any personal opinions of how our veterans may be treated...and give in to the 'day' that's in appreciation for all they have done...isn't that not so hard to do? I mean, c'mon...ONE day out of a whole year...can't we at least put our own opinions aside? Thanks...!

Happy Veterans day!!!!

I'm wearing Veterans 4 Kerry shirt that I got from one of his rallies last june..... My interpreter @ school said good match and great idea...

Your grandfather sounds wonderful. I am very glad that he shared his stories with you. I am sorry that he is not here now. I would be proud to wish him a blessed Veteran's Day.

Thinking about veterans:

Ballad of the Green Beret

by Staff Sergeant Barry Sadler and Robin Moore
copyright 1966

Fighting soldiers from the sky,
Fearless men who jump and die,
Men who mean just what they say,
The brave men of the Green Beret.

CHORUS:
Silver wings upon their chest,
These are men, America's best.
One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret.

Trained to live off nature's land.
Trained in combat, hand-to-hand.
Men who fight by night and day
Courage deep from the Green Berets.

CHORUS

Back at home a young wife waits
Her Green Beret has met his fate
He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request:

"Put silver wings on my son's chest,
Make him one of America's best.
He'll be a man they'll test one day,
Have him win the Green Beret."

Same here! I visited my dad today, and he was so happy.
It is not too late to give a veteran a call, at least, if you have not done so!

Good idea.

There are many veterans in VA hospitals that enjoy visits also.

My dad and my father-in-law were veterans too. I wish we could visit them, but they both passed away many years ago. I am glad that many of you visit your dads and granddads now, before it is too late.

During WWII, my dad and one brother were in the Navy; another brother was a Marine, and their sister was a Navy nurse. During WWI, my grandfather was on a Navy submarine. During Vietnam era, my hubby and I were in the Navy. Anchors aweigh!
