You know young people and texts...Since I cannot use voice phones, I use E mail and texts most of times with my customers. As you probably know, texting is very popular with young people. Yeah, older people do text, but it's young people that do most of texting. My parents are in their 60s. My Mom does text, but Dad does not. That is why most of my customers are younger folks or college students.

I usually expect younger folks when I text with my customers. I was pleasantly happy to sell 3 bikes to a guy who may have been in 60s. It was nice to get to know someone who used to work for a Schwinn mechanic putting together bikes and also doing some repairs.

Not to knock on older people, but I'm always happy when I sell to them because I know many of them hate to text. I'm thankful for those that does.

Yeah, I sure understand what you're saying, and I am 65. I text; have for some years now. Email. AIM. Captioned phones from the state. Used TTY before that. And the only people in my life who will text on any basis at all? My DH (husband) and DD (daughter)! Everyone else in my age range act like it's such a big bother to text. And they're the same ones who are lousy at emailing or answering emails as well. They want to make phone calls, but not call a special # first (like the Captel requires). So I have lost touch with a lot of friends and extended family because of their "phobia" about texting or Internet. :( And then there are the constant battles with my health care and trying to get them to call me back through my IP-Relay phone number, etc. UGH! Because we are Deaf/HOH *we* have to be flexible and go through all this to communicate, but others just don't want to be bothered. :o And then there are my older relatives, who can't adapt to the relay operator type conversation (the Go Ahead, etc.) and so I haven't talked to them in years. And they don't snail mail letters, so...I lose touch. :tears:

I'm glad you have customers of all ages that work with you through text. :)

Well said, GreyEagle...have a brother that I haven't talked to in over 30 years....why?...he lives out of state, and whenever I tried to call him via TTY or VP, he refuses to take the call....saying "I don't want to talk to a machine!"....he won't buy a computer either. Says it's a waste of $$....but really, it's because he cannot understand (or will not try) the Internet technology....Well, the way I see it....it's his loss...and I don't dwell on it....and...he's HEARING, for God's sake!..But still considers me as "retarded."...so go figure! :giggle:

Some people don't have patience with ultra slow conversation like though IP relay, or text based relay. I have asked several hearing people, they hated it so much because if they work for a company, it hurts their performance. Many calling centers have their performance report and if boss sees an employee on phone call for an hour, and see only little result and will scrutize that poor employee. For example boss will ask employee, I see only one order, why are you taking an hour on call? Are you trying to abuse it? That thing gets hearing employees more nervous about. Also, other is security issue, many hearing people would assume it is scammers.

I have alot less problems with Video relay calls than any text based relay.

Oh, good grief! How awful! :O Like you, though, sometimes you just have to give it up when ignorant attitudes persist. I have the Captel phone from the state and for out-going calls, it's not too bad. Except when captioning gets too many sentences behind. :( Incoming is useless because people don't call the special # first or forget to call it. I don't know enough ASL, so video calls are out for me. :/

I'm older than you. Shall I text you? :)

I am not the oldest person I text with regularly, but most of my friends whom I communicate via texting are younger than I am.

I'm an ancient 34. A lot of people are much, much older than me :). Sure, text me.

None of my family outside my home will text with me. None of them will use TTY or VP with me. Also, none will call my on my CapTel phone and speak with me. They will only use email. Now, I have an uncle that doesn't do that, but I can understand. He has Alzheimer's and has to have his ex-wife (very friendly terms) answer any correspondence.

Well the dictionary definition of "Retard"
verb (used with object)
1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

So who's "retarded" now?
I always remember this from an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (called Snuff) where a young man with Down syndrome was murdered and this guy kept calling him a retard and Grissom responded with this quote once they found the man responsible
Grissom (to murderer): The definition of the word 'retard' is to hinder or hold back. I'm afraid your life is about to become 'retarded.'

Love it!

I am wondering if your brother has an outhouse out back. :P

:giggle:....He's "old school" no doubt. But is an Air Force Veteran, several tours in Vietnam.....recovered alcoholic and now a "recluse". Seems life in general really did a # on him also. Some recover and are able to move on, unfortunately, he was not. He considers new technology "tom foolery" and "all those new-fangled gadgets" are a waste of $$...So....if you cannot pick up the phone "like a normal person", then ur retarded....so my way of thinking about him is like a blast from the past.

Good to recognize it's about *him* and not about you at all. And let it go. Rather than carry inner hurt because of his issues.

That's sad... I'm sorry. I know you're happy and all, but it's sad to me when family members behave that way. To me, family is #1 but I know not everyone holds the same belief. You're right though... It's his loss.

Hahaha thanks Simon

It's been a very trying week so my brain is on meltdown
