Hallelujah! The trees are coming down!

We're going to use the wood from the oak tree for about three years worth of fire wood.

We already have small oak and Japanese cherry trees growing between the old trees, so it won't look barren.

Japanese Cherry Trees are beautiful from what I've heard about them, but I've never seen one, though. Must be because they're not capable of growing here.

I guess that's how strongly your Homeowners' Association felt about the potential willy-nilly felling of trees........
Actually, in this case, it's not the HOA. Our subdivision was built in two stages. The older part is in the county; the newer part (where our house is) was built within the Town limits. It's a Town ordinance that controls the tree cutting. The residents in the county section aren't under that ordinance.

Yes, they are very pretty. Our trees bright pink blossoms on them right now. Later, they will have soft green leaves. Their trunks and branches also have nice shapes.

Ah, no wonder people like those trees. I've heard they have a way of calming one's mind? Not sure if that's true or not.

plenty of cherry trees in Toronto though.

Of all trees, that one is the one I would least expect to find there. I would've expected to see PLENTY of maple trees there (Toronto Maple Leafs, anyone?).

I think some trees have plants as a pairs. I know someone that planted a fruit tree and they never got any fruits.

You have be to joking ! What is a tree did fall on your house or neighbor house, I bet you could not sues the city for not allowing the trees to come down.

You are correct.

Has such a case actually come up and they were not able to sue? I would think if someone had a record of what the tree looked like before it fell, the turn down by the city and the damage done it should at least be checked with a lawyer before absorbing the cost of repair. Even if insured there would probably be a deductible involved.

Another win for being patient and waiting it out patiently jumping through the hoops while feeling the frustration of dealing with a knuckleheaded system.
Sometimes there is a small value at the sawmill. There may be a portable sawmill around that will do a fifty/fifty split on the lumber. The old trees have the best wood. 8k per tree sounds awful high. That must be a total cost with the stumpgrinding and all the branches removed. Still sounds a bit high. I know you went with licensed, insured, and bonded. I cannot help but wonder if the trees are declared a hazard because of storm damage if your homeowners insurance would pay for the removal.
In which case they are beautiful old trees oh the pain at the town declaring them a hazard... smiles here. I admire your patience.

No, the $8k per tree is the fine if they get cut down without permission. We haven't gotten the estimates yet but I'm expecting it to be less than $1k for cutting down, removing, stump grinding, and cleanup.

We're going to keep the wood from the oak tree for firewood.

We have a $2k deductible for insurance so it's not worth making a claim.

Our next step is to call the utility line marking service. TCS thinks some of the electrical line runs thru the tree roots.

That could be dangerous if there is indeed cable lines there. That would be a very nasty shock. Smart idea to make sure there aren't any there.

I sure got that one misunderstood. That sounds much better. I am just curious how big in diameter at approximately shoulder level is the pine?

Pine diameter = 21" (circumference 66")
Oak diameter = 40" (circumference 128")

Hey thanks, I can see it all now. That will be like all your birthdays at once getting those out of there. That oak has been taking up a lot of sky hasn't it?

Yes

What about gas lines , you don't want to hit a gas line.
We don't have any gas lines. Anyway, the line service marks all utilities in one visit--gas, water, cable, phone, and electric--whatever is on the lot.

I have gas line right in front of my building and when we had some hedges ripped out the fools drove the machine right over marker for the gas line. The machine dug deep into ground to get to the roots of the hedge. I am glad I was not home when this was being done , and I was lucky the fools did not blow up my condo.

Here is one of my cherry trees. You can see the blooms, and its relationship to the tree that will be cut down (the one with the white ribbon tied on it).
