It is an element. It is also easy to melt.

That picture was most likely taken at room temperature, so it can't be mercury. It's really easy to melt that stuff, just touching it is enough.

Sure, the filename made it easy to find where the picture was from. It's what happened to United Airlines Flight 811. A bad door lock on a cargo door let the door come open and rip off the side of the plane over the Pacific in 1989. Whoosh, explosive decompression & 9 people dead.
