I dont know anyone with ASL other than my wife who was learning with me. There are workers at Home Depot, Hoods and some eateries here that know ASL but not friends or anything yet.... so really I have no one to practice, communicate with. When my wife and I would talk, i guess I was lazy on my part since she could hear I would talk to her but she would sign to me, then she started ignoring me or wearing ear plugs til I used ASL to respond. I can "read" it better than display it since my fingers are so stiff, i have seen others use ASL when out in public but they, I guess being super experienced, seem to just flag their hands around barely changing finger styles/shapes and I had no clue what they were signing? I mean seriously, next time I will try and snap a video, it looks as it tucking the thumbs and fingers together and flagging for a taxi... and they just carry on. Is it that advanced to do ASL with minimal movements and still know what they are saying even when every movement looks practically the same? wow.

When I lost my knowledge of ASL for 10 years, I already knew it, but when I found out that I needed ASL to survive? WOW-- things had changed considerably since the last time I used it prior to re-learning it again. Now that I have, I do not ever intend to let it go again. Lesson learned.

Being a lot of signs are so close in ASL I get confused sometimes, like D and F, so sometimes I have to take a second to remember which letter is which,

Can you find a ASL book on-line? I know Borders used to sell these when they were around, but they were the only ones I know did.
 
I have basic ASL.. and I mean basic.. bare minimum. I have a hard time "reading" the other people who are signing. Most of the time when I do sign with my friend in California via FaceTime on my computer she is ASL and I sign exact english. I think that is where I get confused. Being mainstreamed in school and learning to use " proper " english makes it harder for me to understand. Thankfully when I do sign, my friend is very patient with me and the other thing is.. she has no voice. I do and I sign using my voice as well. I have relied way to much on voice and not using my brain.. It's okay to mess up and I get that a lot because she would just laugh at me and tell me the correct sign. two thumbs up @sonactivo.~!~!!!

I know its crazy, but hearies just dont understand or get it, and some just flat out refuse to accept it. I got friends who told me if I need them to make calls for me or whatever to let them know, but by time they get home the offices are closed... not comfortable giving out personal info to all my friends, just a select few I can truely trust, and those few arent anywhere close to contact as well. Ive never had the tech stuff other than an amplified phone, and now that I actually need stuff VR changed their guidlines and cant get crap from them now anyways.

I can understand that. I'm profoundly deaf. Before the digitial era was born, I had to depend on a family member or a friend to make a phone call for me. Believe it or not, some requested that I use my voice as a confirmation that I granted a permission to a family member or a friend as a proxy to talk for me. Ha!

Jiro and others offered suggestions like Sprint Relay. You have a iPhone, so go for it. I understand you're not a techie, but you can adapt by just playing with a smartphone. I promise you that it will make a huge difference for you. I depend on my smartphone and Sorenson nTouch. When your ASL skills improve, you can download Sorenson app on iPhone or tablet to make a phone call. If you miss a call, you can check the messages. It's great.

I have the ASL Dictionary as well as some other books and DVD's, just that Ive had so much distractions with this house the past year just didnt get enough practice. Things have calmed down, probly going to sell this house this spring and move ( great location, just hate the community)
Move closer to friends in a better community, smaller house... too much for just me.

Agreed. My own parents did not like having to say GA/SKSK, and until Sorenson VRS came out with the VP-100, there was no way to smoothly have a conversation with them. Now that there is, I wouldn't go back to the age of TTYS ever again.

Since you have those, why don't you show your family? Maybe they might be a little more open to accommodating you a little better? Just a thought.

True but the problem with using 3G/4G service off of your phone plan, using VRS eats up your data allowance from what I have read. If you use VRS frequently or even the facetime or similar apps seems to me that eats up the GB.

I have a 1 GB plan (I barely used up the 5GB one I had on T Mobile...) but I'm at 90% already within the first 3 weeks...and that was because of using Pandora out of wifi range (my volunteer job has no free wifi nearby- all secured).

Mine is 3 GB. It lasts about 3 weeks or so before I go over. It does eat up your data, it is true, but with Cricket, at least I'm not paying a roller coaster phone bill as I would be if I were on a 2-year plan. :hmm: I just may add one more GB to my plan soon.

You aren't alone there. My parents both have very very very basic sign knowledge. Dad is better with the fingerspelling but he still gets confused between D and F and P and K (there's a long standing joke with that pair...). Takes time but I think you'll catch on. Books are good, DVDs/videos are better but best are classes and live one on one.

An old friend of my aunt's once learned some signs via a book ... problem was when he went out in the 'real world' he had a hard time reading others but if he saw the signs 'backwards' (meaning if he stood behind the person signing) he understood it a little better lol.

yeah... I'm okay with 1GB for now (all I can afford) since I do not use VRS on my phone (may be too small for me to see well) so I stick with my PC and big ass monitor :)- haven't tried it on my iPad yet.

My parents are too old to bother with it, I wouldnt blame them anyways. My daughter now, she knows fingerspelling and some ASL, she may benefit from it with her new career as a certified Pharmacy Tech.

I have. My old phone WAS kinda hard to see with, that much is true. I'm planning on getting a Samsung phone in the spring, as the bigger video is much better for viewing. Be warned, though, that using it eats your battery faster than mobile data alone.

I just was thinking, this is turning out to be positive in the long run with so many of us being able to offer help any way they can. I think I have learned new things I might be able to use later down the road. Some of us are more independent than we think we are and some of us know we need things in our lives to help us be independent. Pride can get in the way of all of us one way or another. There's no shame in what we do to survive with what we got handed. Thanks to everyone who is helping!!!

Yep, if everyone wouldnt jump conclusions straight off the start, things would be more positive in the beginning.
I am stubborn, very independant and hard to swallow asking for help as it takes away that Macho-ness, manlyhood... but sometimes we all need a hand with something no matter how strong we are.

Have you gone into the iPhone's Accessibilities options? There might be some option there that would make the phone more user friendly for you.

You're welcome. There's very little that I don't know about iPhones. I am a HUGE iPhone fan.

I will tell y'all this though, my wife is the President of Verizon's Employee Resource Group with disabilities. I joined her for a seminar a couple of months ago. There is an app coming out in February just for people with disabilities. It is for all types of impairments. ie: blind, deaf, color blind and more. When it come available I will post more info. BUT it might be just for Android platform to start.
