My name is Ed, hearing, I'm 19, and I'm from Bergen County New Jersey. My friend told me about a very small unofficial sign language club in my high school (made up of my friend and a teacher) during my junior year that was disbanded at the end of my sophomore year. I started to get interested in sign language but then I had to study for SATs and all that college entrance junk.
My interests in sign language became dormant for a few years until earlier this summer when I saw a song on youtube translated into ASL. Specifically, it was the song "This is the New ****" by Marylin Manson translated by "st0rmfx." Later that day, I probably looked up another 10 songs translated to ASL. I felt a little hypnotized, in a good way, by the movements of all the translators. My first thoughts was that the people were dancing and singing at the same time without having to speak. Also later that night, I looked up fingerspelling for babies and learned the alphabet the same night that way XD
After a few weeks of watching the songs on youtube with the lyrics and the literal ASL translations, I was able to pick up a few phrases. I learned how to start a conversation like "My name is Ed. What is your name? It is nice to meet/see you." I want to sign to other people and have a real conversation to see how it is like but I know absolutely no one that knows sign language. I used to be able to quickly spell my name, and common objects pretty quickly for a beginner but now I struggle to spell my last name mostly because I stopped practicing since there was no one to practice with.
Now, I'm at a dead end because I can't find someone to sign with AND I can't find any classes where I can learn ASL. I missed the registration for a community college near by and the only other one I can find is in Manhattan. There is only so much I can learn from youtube...oh yeah, I just found out a couple of minutes ago that I was doing the signs for some letters incorrectly. Thanks AllDeaf for telling me.

I know that my intro is at a stupid length so here is the "sparknotes" version: I saw a youtube video then got interested in ASL. I want to learn more XD
