Great!! My thread got locked up

I don't think he misunderstood. Sign language and oral languages with no written form are alike, and both have "oral" history, which only means it is remembered and recounted in person from one to another on down lines of time.

That's really well known, and I think the weird thing is nobody but DHB seemed to know that and wanted to start a fight with him.

I have two words for you and others..

Functional Equivalent

My point is, ASL is still in infant stage (Not even more than 200 years old), it takes time for ASL to develop, and will become writable language. As of right now in Functional Equivalent, it is Spoken Language UNTIL right word comes in for it. My main concern is why feeding hearing people wrong information, which only leads more oppression for Deafies.

Bottom line, when I express myself by speaking up... (Wait! how do I speak when I can't use my mouth and tongue? {Thoughts of hearing people}) with my ASL, just because ASL is not considered as spoken language? Wait wait! It gets even more confusing that way!

Keep Functional Equivalent intact! We the Deaf functions just same way as hearing people except hear.

I know about oppression but you got derailed into another comment about spoken language on ASL. I was shocked what you said. You have to remember that we don't use our voices to speak while signing. ASL is visual language. We don't go for oral method in the public places. We sign only with voice off. Everything need to be visual, not using our voices. I don't know where you get the idea from RIT on Deafness and ASL. That does not seem right to me.

You must have been misunderstood what they said at RIT. I think they wanted to say that they are fighting for their d/Deaf need rights. They can use placards or banners to announce for their Deaf rights. This is totally different thing. Maybe that is why it was locked, I think.

That is why we are confused what he was saying in Frisky Feline's thread. For me, I can not grasp what he was talking about. The sentences that he was saying does not make sense to me. Maybe you are right, Botti. We get misunderstood. :(

Also I didn't remember it being in any of DHB's posts in the other thread that what he was telling us was something that he learned at RIT. If that had been there, it may have made a difference in how his posts were received.

Post #92 in the other thread (though late and after a lot of the arguments)
Psst, I learn bunch of em at RIT/NTID on Deafness, ASL, and other Deaf related topics. That is where I learn, before that, I thought much same way you have thought too.

All nice and dandy, but FF thread was about whether or not one would prefer to be born deaf or late deafened.
Whoever wished to discuss languages could have had opened his/her own thread. it's as simple as that.

FYI, AC is the one that derailed that thread, see post #57 and on. Don't ask me to create thread just because somebody derailed the thread.

If a thread is locked, it's for a reason...now with the finger pointing going on here. I'll have to lock this one again... if people can't debate cordially, that is what happens and the postings in her thread contained partial political discussion. If you have questions about a locked threads, PM the mods. This is example of why this thread gets carried away with the blame game.

Let's move on please.
