Great Depression Meals

Just looking at a lot of these dishes is enough to make me feel like my heartburn is returning.

My dad grew up on a poor farm in Indiana during the Great Depression. One of his favorite breakfast items was taking hot bacon grease and mixing it with molasses, and then pouring it over biscuits. He used to make it for us. Unhealthy, most likely, but it sure tasted good!

I love to eat cooked cabbage, especially cooked in the pot with corned beef, but it doesn't agree with my tummy afterward. :(

Sounds good to me but i'm afraid such a dish would blow my diabetes out of control.

local? I thought it was a national brand.

I don't think it's national, but I could be wrong. I think it started in Nottingham, PA, but I could be wrong about that too.

Jillio & Beach Girl say they have it in their areas, so obviously Herr's territory has grown.

Have you ever tried taking digestive enzymes prior to eating cabbage or other "trouble" food
Digestive Enzymes for Digestive Health

they really work!
buy them in any health food store, best are natural,
and take as many as you find you need.

You will know during "trail and error" course :)

You will be able to finally enjoy foods you normally have problem with.

Herr's Tomato Ketchup chips have been seen in Walmart here in Iowa.

My grandparents used to take old cooked down coffee and add the cane syrup or molasses and mix it and dip our biscuits in that.

I can hear my arteries plugging up.

And they say that McDonald's is bad?

Besides the coffee and syrup, it usually has ham or bacon drippings, but there are several ways to make it.

My grandma did use bacon grease in cooking several things. Tomatoe gravy and grits is one of my favorites.

Ugh, now remember my mom had a tin on the top of the stove that she collected bacon grease in. Had a strainer in the top to collect the "chunks". I don't know what she re-used the bacon grease for, but I know it did sit out all time time. Wonder how old that bacon grease got? :giggle:

Further discussion of bacon grease is henceforth forbidden in this thread.

I have had a lot of those things on the list. When we ate regular bacon, we always kept the grease and used it do a lot of our cooking. Made things taste so much better.

We used to eat cucumber and onion sandwiches a lot. My grandmother was fond of tomato skin sandwiches with mayo and black pepper. She would peel the tomato, and use the skins for the sandwich, then the rest of the tomato for soup.
