I was wondering if there were any HOH or Deaf mothers out there that want to give me advice on how they got through taking care of their newborns. I am HOH(servere) and my husband and I are planning on having kids soon. I am concern because how am I suppose to hear my baby cry in the middle of the night? (say my husband sleeps through it) Do you use dogs? Certin Devices? I am thinking about getting a hearing dog to help me but the waiting list for one is 5 years! Yah right...so maybe I can train one...anyone done that before? Any advices would be great! Even if you didnt have anything, encouragement on how you got through would greatly help.

get a vibrating/video monitor, fire alarm for deaf people (it help you sleep better so you have to worry so much), co-sleeping bed

one thing I wished I done is learn ASL before the baby so I can teach him signing. There are time my kid want to talk to me, but I couldn't. It's to improve the relationship.

A dog is very helpful. He's very helpful for me because he waked me up when our son is awake.

That's about all I think of.

Look around here a little. There are many threads just like yours. You should be able to find that in material already here.

Thanks! ASL will be the first Language my child will know :) I didn't realize the had vibrating monitors. I'll look that up

Believe me, I've spent hours searching for topics about deaf moms and babies. I see some advices here and there but never from someone who is a deaf mother themselves. Just wanted someone to relate to

Cry monitor...I had used them in 1997 and again in 2005 with both of my babies. I was happy with them.

Go to Harriscommunications.com

I had my baby sleep in the same room with me until she was old enough to sleep in big girl bed. I did not hear one time crying at night. A friend did and she gave her a bottle. I felt horrible not hearing my baby cry! I wish I knew about hearing dog then!

My son co-sleep with us until he was in preschool (around 4 years old). Now he gets up and get me.

I breastfed him too so that's why I let him co-sleep with us in the first place.

Thank you for the links! Those will help :) I'll probably use both, a dog and a moniter thing. I just want to be totally prepared for everything (Even though I know I'll never fully be prepared haha)

When looking after my niece I have a Sonic Alert Sonic Boom Alarm clock (with receiver), and a baby cry monitor. I also have a baby monitor that senses that the baby is breathing and will alarm if the baby stops breathing.

I put the babycry monitor in her room, right by her crib and where the baby monitor alarm is ... then if she cries or is in trouble (breathing problem) the baby cry monitor will "hear" either her crying or the alarm sounding. The baby cry monitor then sends a signal to the Sonic Boom alarm clock for me and it either shales me, or flashes a light (my choice).

I'd recommend that you get in touch with a local Deaf Resource centre, or Vocational Rehab place that specializes in Assistive devices for Hoh/Deaf as well as helping parents-to-be (or new parents) learn what is available to facilitate taking care of their infants etc.

For what it's worth - I personally would NOT recommend relying on a Hearing dog (especially one that isn't professionally trained and certified as a hearing dog) for knowing when your infant is crying etc in the night ... for a number of reasons. They may be an additional "back up" - but I'd personally what something like a monitor/alarm etc combo.

Also - if you do apply for a Hearing Dog, make sure that from the very first application etc you stress that you will be having children, and that your hope is that one of the dog's main responsibilities will be listening for the infant/ child. This will impact what kind of dog they train... and they will be able to tell you if a hearing dog can be trained to do this reliably/safely or if that is something that isn't realistic to expect from the dog.

Hope that helps!!
