Getting theaters to show movies with open-captioning

I just wrote another letter to my local theatre. Been a while since I did that.

Hope you'll be able to get your theatre to start providing access to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community sometimes soon.

But in the meantime, the legaleze can be used for enforcement purposes and to set a precedent.

which is faster and easier: Putting a rule that clearly defines the thing and have a 1 year period for it all to be enforced, or going through all the legalese and courts, etc to enforce something?

Considering how long it took for the ADA to come into existence, I'd say that would be choice B, Alex.

... well, there is no obvious answer to that. It all depends on what route it goes. I'm fairly sure if we can get this ADA thing passed, itll be all downhill from there.

I have faith that it will be passed, as well. But changes to the ADA take time. If one wants to set a precedent now, one has to use what is currently available.

For instance...the film industry is not liable for insuring that all films on DVD are captioned. However, if one uses a film that is not captioned in the classroom, we have to go to educational access to insure that a realtime transcriptionist is provided during that showing.

Thanks guys. Very helpful information.

I will contact an ADA lawyer in Indianapolis, but I am prepared for that to be a slow route, and will try and win this by being polite and persuasive and getting the community behind me.

I'm going to set up a simple website and an online petition drive, as well as schedule meetings to meet with the managers or the theaters in person.

I'll keep you all updated.

:ty: again!

Community support is always effective. And it would avoid a lengthy court battle.

how many deaf live in your metro area? you would need numbers like that to show that the oc would be justified. have you tried contacting the corporate headquarters?
goodrich quality theaters inc, headquarters address
4417 Broadmoor SE
Kentwood, MI 49512
United States
Phone: 616-698-7733
try finding out if they have any theaters that do have OC. if some of their theaters DO have OC then you can ask them to talk with your local theater manager and they can show the manager how to go about having OC available. local managers will usually not do anything themselves. but since most theaters are corporations you can go to the head office and look for answers there

I have wonderful news to report!

After a few phone calls and writing an email that included a persuasive request and lots information on hearing loss and open captioning, the company that owns the theaters in town ARE IMPLEMENTING OPEN CAPTIONING!!! When? Next week!!!!

Wow, I am so happy and excited about this. It only took them a few weeks to research OC systems, purchase one, and set up a schedule.

The first movie that will be showed is "The Town." Haven't heard of it, lol, but I'll still be going!

For anyone who is interested in getting OC movies in their own town, feel free to contact me and I will be happy to tell you the process I went through.

Whoohoo!

"The Town" got good reviews.

We had Open captioning in my town before, but some reasons that stopped and the only captioning theater , either rearview captioning or opening captioning, near me is about 30 minutes away from me according to captionfish.

So don't be surprised they will show open captioning for a while and decide to stop because of not enough consumers using it. You might want to ask rearview captioning for a permanent stay.
