Getting Older Another Scare

Interesting article, but I hope it doesn't give cause for hearing people to assume that because we are Deaf/HoH we also have dementia! There's already plenty of stupid people out there who ignorantly associate deafness with a lack of intelligence.

Actually maybe it's like cortical deafness. This is a type of deafness where there's nothing wrong with the ear, but the brain cannot process sound.
Maybe with dementia there is a special type of loss where the brain loses its agilty to process sound.

Oh...just what we need!

In today's Toronto Globe & Mail there is a discussion on the article but points there is only an association. Needs far more study to arrive at some conclusion. It didn't mentioned whether deaf /Deaf persons were included. It made no mentioned if persons with Cochlear Implants are included either.

There's a special type of dementia required to be a member of a loud rock group, and the hearing loss is blamed on stupidity. They could be right.

I think it is nothing more than a coincidence- a lot of long term residents with dementia get confused, agitated, repeat things, should be faced when approached, etc... patients with dementia*usually* older and many older patients have hearing loss as well. In my own experience I just think they are closely related because of coincidence

It says it is partly related to the isolation caused by deafness. Hearing people who are isolated develop dementia at a higher rate too.

Special cause for dementia in rockers groups? Right-- rocks in the head!

Does social isolation lead to dementia-excluding rockers, of course?
Next study by Prof SKY to test that hypothesis in local retirement home for "potential dementia"/normal citizens. Busy at work devising a 100 page questionnaire.

Right Bottesini- NO slacker!

Loneliness is associated with an increased risk of late-life dementia but on the grand scale of things this is not the primary cause of dementia or alzheimers
also many people can feel lonely but not be alone

I guess it depends on one's personal interaction in one's social network if how one's "feels lonely". Do "hermits" feel lonely?

Some don't. Some people feel lonely among friends.

Why not go and say "Hi" to a hermit? Then again that may be offensive.

PFH; no hermits in the neighbourhood. Understand relocated to The Peoples Republic of BOLDERS. Like your quiet area.

Boulder is actually a very social place. Where else can you find a naked Halloween run? Nederland has a frozen dead guy festival, too. :cool2:

This is why I prefer to stay deaf. Hearing is associated with too many risks, like dementia(you have to loose hearing to risk dementia, meaning hearing in the first place).

Not true. Isolation caused by deafness whether born or acquired were both seen as contributing.

lose hearing not loose...sorry that is a big pet peeve of mine

and you can be at risk for dementia whether hearing or deaf. I still believe that it is just a coincidence about the hearing loss and dementia.

No prob. I appreciate it when people comments my grammars and spelling.

I don't know at all, but I wouldn't be surprised, by the way this finding is presented, if the cochlear industry is trying to expand into new markets.
