I only wish I knew more. My sister has many autistic tendencies and medical complications, and she did not communicate very well until a few years ago. My mother did her best to incorporate sign language in our daily lives. We did not live around any who could help us grow as a family in our ASL abilities.
My older sister is the most awesome advocate I'll ever know. She is the one who has gotten an Associates degree in ASL interpreting, assimilated Deaf Culture, and helped my twin sister in her identity and communication as Deaf. My twin sister is now trying to become independent and it will be a long, hard, yet worthwhile endeavor for both her and her family. I hope and pray that someday soon I can see my sister an integral part of a community which accepts her, with a niche and purpose in live, fully self sustained and content.
