I have operator license to operate forklift and many powered equipments such as Genie, JLG lift, forked riders, speeder (it's like forked rider but longer forks and have steering by wire) and Tug. I never had any issue. I'm 100% Deaf and don't need CI (I have CI but never wears it). Eyeing around is the key.. I worked for USPS as Maintenance Mechanic (now retired recently) and I am proud that USPS allows many Deaf Mailhandlers to operate Forklifts and powered equipments, All are 100% deaf, no HA or CI...
I have heard one deaf friend told me he applied forklift job at Walmart and when he got hired, Walmart Manager refused to let him drive forklift. They hired young hearing guy to operate forklift. It was infuriating to him. He said manager told him that OSHA not allow Deaf to operate forklift. That's the biggest BS liar manager say. I may plan to apply Walmart down the road and apply for Forklift position. If Manager says OSHA law. I will use LegalShield to sue him for lying. I still have Operator license to prove it. It have NOTHING to do with OSHA regulation. Manager are just afraid of Deaf simple as is. Heard other deaf friend who works for Coca Cola in Lenexa, Kansas and he operated forklift no problem.
If you are a first time Forklift driver, #1 important thing is keep eye all AROUND and ABOVE you!!! DRIVE SLOW and EASY!!! When drive around corner with load, GO SLOOOWWW and Watch where you are going. Use your HINDSIGHT and COMMON SENSE!!! IT's always that If you turn corner with load, load can tilt and fall if you drive fast. Every time you unload from shelf or double stacked boxes, always always lift up just few inches and look to make sure load are not snagged. back up slowly and gingerly ( take very easy) then lower the load once you are clear. NEVER drive across workfloor with load halfway up or full jacked up high!!! It can tip over Forklift. You can lift load over some narrow spot with opening above spot and go slow then lower the load to keep driving. When you drive across workfloor with no loads, ALWAYS lower forks to 1 or 2 inches above floor. Why because if you drive with fork halfway (like 2 or 3 feet above), You may never know that you will skewer someone pop out of corner. NEVER drive full speed between dock entry doors, line of palleted load on floor ect because employee can walk between it pass by the gap that you might not see it. Go SLOW when you pass thru and give you time to slam brake if employee pop out of corner. (It was very very common at USPS). When you operate Forklift, Be responsible for employee's live. DON"T BE A Big Shot and mow someone down (It did happen at my work and employee got broken leg and Speeder driver who drove too fast got fired). IF you want to last long on Forklift job, DON"T listen to manager or any employee pushing you to hurry up, try it try it ect (anything that employee or boss try to tempt you to do unsafe manner). Worry about Safety first!!! IF manager give you hard time cuz you were trying to follow safety. Report to UNION or Safety Lead person..
Too often I have seen Hearing fork driver at Post Office hit trailer upper door frame, ripped hole on trailer ceiling, hit sprinkler pipe, hit conveyor belt, lights ect (They were driving tall rental forklift and they did not even think twice, no common sense!!). I had to repair lot of damages that Hearing forklift hit. I even had to rebuild guard alongside mail dumpster, replaced conveyor belt (belt guard was ripped out and left conveyor belt open then stupid fork driver drove right thru and tall mast hit belt and ripped it off, costing USPS $20,000 to replace and Fork driver got suspended ( Of course Union
defending employees) Mind you, it happens THREE TIMES!!!. I even warned one forklift driver (15 year employee) NOT to drive under low lying area. She ignored my warning and BAM!! She hit sprinkler and it broke off pipe. Water gushing out 20 feet to floor where 120v motor control box located. My Maint Co worker and I took a huge risk trying to cap broken pipe. We succeed cap it (using new opened valve and short pipe to screw in then shut off). Luckily because if water spray to Loader area (where equipment park at box (it's like dumpster but it tilts 30 degree up for chute to dump mail in equipment). It have 480 volt control box there. It would have been very dangerous and deadly. My co worker and I would have to shut off 480 volts power for safety. All Maintenance including me, Maint supervisors all had to mop and vacuum flooded floor. It flooded almost 1/2 of the building and cause $100,000 damages and there were oil slick almost everywhere on floor due to Tow Line on floor. It was really bad. I was the witness and reported to supervisor.. Fork driver was only suspended for 2 weeks and back to drive forklift
. Ugh! Thought she would have been fired and sued for safety violation.. SMH!
I have seen brand new forklift only month old got badly damaged on fork mast and even fork guard. I asked my co worker why would stupid employees do that!! Unbelievable!!!
