Foreign Films

LOL.... tusen takk, kuifje! (many thanks)... Ja, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, that was what I wanted to say. Velkommen, you are so close! Valkommen was sorta Swedish. Where did you learn those bits of "norsk"? hehe

skriv snart - letter soon/shortly, literally translated. Was that what you meant? hehee

Or did you mean this: Skriver du såvidt Norsk (Do you write little Norwegian?)

I am not a Norwegian, actually. American living in Norway and married to a Norwegian. I've been learning to write and read Norwegian (Norsk) in 8 months. Not bad, huh? Just the bokmål version (book language, influenced by the Danish), compared with nynorsk (new norwegian, recently started by a farmer here).

Oh! I just saw a funny action french movie called Wasabi. It's about a french guy who is a very tough cop using unconventional methods to nab the bad guys, and he goes back to Japan and finds that he has a daughter he never knew about by a recently deceased love.

Yep, "Fucking Amål" was cool... whoa, they changed the title to "Show Me Love."

Hope that helps!

Hej Liza! Nej, jeg kan ikke norsk, men jeg lære dansk siden et år.
(Hey Liza! No, I don't know Norwegian, but I have been learning Danish since a year.)

I had three penpals in Denmark, and at the end of the letters, they would write "Skriv snart!" That is interesting to know that Norwegian is similar to Danish, and that a farmer is trying to reform the language. I was in Copenhagen, and it was easy for me to understand Danish because it was somewhat similar to German and Dutch. (I speak German fluently, and Dutch is like German.)

I have heard about "Wasabi" and I guess I will watch it soon since you said it is a good movie. I love wasabi, BTW!

I think I saw the movie you talked about on German television. Not sure... I'll probably have to rent it somehow and watch it again to see if I saw it before or not.

Det må du undskylde... jeg kan dansk ikke godt skriver. Jeg er nødt til lære flere!!!
(I am sorry, I can't really write in Danish well. I need to learn more!!!)

Farvel!

The best foreign movies I watched was "Life is Beautiful" from Roberto Benigini and also "La Dolce Vita" from Federico Fellini. "La Dolce Vita", translated in English, also meant "Life is Beautiful". This movie was about a photographer all caught up in the mystique world of papparazzi. It's really interesting to watch it.

I thought it translated to "The Sweet Life" :dunno:
These two are also my favourites :)

Ahhh! Gotcha. It's not surprising that the Danes influenced the Norwegian language since they occupied Norway for a while. Swedes even had a crack at Norway.

Wasabi, hehe... I miss cali rolls with a touch of wasabi, dipped in soy sauce! I can make them, but not as good as those guys at Union Station, DC!

Det er greit hvis du skriver ikke mye! Jeg er ikke ekspert på det heller. (It is OK if you can't write much. I am not an expert at it either.)

Håper du har det godt! (I hope you have it good, or hope you are well)

Jeg må se film Life is Beautiful, da. ;)

(I must see film Life is Beautiful, then!) Sounds goooood....

I liked the movie Osama, although it was very sad  I watch a lot of indie films, but being as I don't know how to find them, I don't know of many foreign films, but I'm sure most of them are better than the crap hollywood puts out every year... I don't even go to the movies anymore, what they play is just agrevating it's so stupid.

[edit] I've seen life is beautiful... very very good film!

I saw the movie " Osama " about a muslim girl forced by her mom to dress like a boy under the Tablian regime in order to survive and the things she went through in Afghanstain. She got a glimpse into the man's world. I am not sure if this was based on a true story but it is very possible.

I also liked " Il Postino " about the author Pablo Neruda who was from either Argentina or Chile and was very famous author for writing poems unfortunately for him, he was a communist and exiled to Sicily. A Sicilian postman brings the famous author his mail and he falls in love for a young woman in town and Pablo helps teaches him how to win the woman of his dreams. This is based on a true story.

I have seen so many foriegn films to numerous to simply just list and they are alots better than American made films in that respect.

it was a true story and it was also the first movie filmed in the "post-Taliban" era of Afghanistan.

For me, I prefer French or German or Italian films. Have any one of you seen Cinema Paradiso or Big Night or Babettes Feast, etc?

I may be an American but I prefer foreign films over any American films any day!

Too many German and Italian films to think off the top of my head. I always try to rent foriegn films whenever possible with English subtitles but once I become proficient in the German and the Italian language then I can sit down to watch the movie entirely in German or Italian subtitles.

I remmy I saw Deafracula long time ago. I thought there might ahve two or three movies beside coming up new deaf movie Forgot Me Not.

Seven Samurai. I love it. One of the best movies ever in the history of movies.

Seconded. It also got digitally remastered for sound and picture by Criterion(Criterion Collection). Also so good that it has to be remade by Hollywood. Supposedly George Clooney is going to act in it.

-District B-13 (Banielue 13)- A French action romp that rivals any american movie.

-Turtles Can Fly- A movie set in Iraq that I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

-Hard Boiled, The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, A Better Tomorrow II- See some of the eariler Hong Kong films by John Woo and starring Chow Yun-Fat.

-Ong-Bak: Thai Warrior- Tony Jaa stars in this action movie displaying the art of Muay Thai kickboxing.

-Red Beard, Ran, Seven Samurai, and Throne of Blood- These 4 are films by Akira Kurosawa(Japan) that I have seen. All of them are masterpeices. I like them all, butI have a funny fondness for Red Beard.

-Porco Rosso, Spirited Away, Nausicaa, Pom Poko, Castle of Cagliostro, Cowboy Bebop the movie, Princess Mononoke, Dead Leaves, Karas, Golgo 13: The Professional, and Golgo 13:Queen Bee- Japanese animation "anime" films I enjoy and recommend.
