As a parents, what are the things you dislike about your child's school and what are the things you would like to see change?....
 
I am a grandparent, not a parent, but since I pay for the kids' tuition, I guess I can give my opinion.

My only suggestions for changes or improvements is that their school needs larger rooms, more sports variety, an opportunity for Deaf education, and to seperate the elementary school from the high school. Right now, the elementary and high schools share facilities.

Liebling -- we would be interested to hear ur thoughts abt the German school programs too! i know i would! :D

*not a parent of human kids but am interested to hear what u moms & dads have to say* :D

The biggest thing I dislike about my daughters school is:

No cultural diversity ( 99.9 percent are upper middle class, white, conservative Catholics)

My girls are rarely exposed to other cultures/races/socieoecomical levels/religions so I often try to tell them that the world is NOT like that at their school.

I grew up in these kind of schools myself and I never met a black person until I was way into college.

I would take my girls OUT of that school but their father wouldn't let me so what I can do these days is take my girls to culturally diverse areas and have them see what the world is all about.

I cannot change that at their school because it is a private Jesuit school and only upper class Catholics can afford it. Tuitition for both girls is 650 a month.
 
i would love to but you cant sometimes

I have a seven yr old son who is in 1st grade and doing real well (in hearing elementary school). they tried to say negative things bout my son from other schools saying he needed to go to a sign langauge school. i told them no way. I have got invovle special program for special edu and pta . sooo when i told them they were wrong now i have proved them wrong nowadays. He is very smart is just those hearing cant handle them I had to show them how becuz i came from same school he is going now. Thewy were shocked that his edu level from pre k went only 50% now at first grade its 71 % . Now I would love to see hearing to exept them (deaf) as normal. I had to fight almost alot since Iam self-employed. but before i lost two jobs becuz being there for him .i am the only including my son is deaf in the both generations family. What I dont like is the fact is some hearing cant handle them so i show then wrong. .Isnt that what fathers suppsed to do. Just like my mom and dad did for me. But anyway you got to fight what you beleive nomatter what. !!!!
 
my son hasn't gone to public school yet.. however he does have weekly school which a teacher came to my house every week teaching him stuff how to speak.. well as far i'm fine with it as long the teacher herself knows some signs and is doing what i'm expecting..
 
does daycare count??? I wish prices would lower since prices here are ridiculous. We spend 350 a week for two boys. But they are really great in education.

Wish they had more recess time, here in VA only allow 15 mins of recess a day. They consider recess is walking to class to another class such as music.

How can kids excercise more, if they don't have enough time in recess, does that lead to obesity??? People on board of education are full of idiots. :dizzy:

My grandsons attend a private Christian (Baptist) school. It is for everyone, not just upper class. It is diverse. Students are white, black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, foreign exchange (Sweden), some with physical handicaps, etc. There are scholarships to help families afford the tuition. Church member families get a discount on tuition. It costs almost $600 per month for the two boys (elementary school). High school costs more.

My daughter graduated from the same school, so I have been paying tuition for many, many years. :)

Reba, you are fortunate to have that kind of school. Mine doesnt have that luxury. Each parish is different. The parish we belong to happens to be located in a well off area.
 
Our school district is too small and poor; so there's no cultural diversity, nor money for 'enrichment'/advanced programs. They've had to cut back to core programs and they pace them for the slowest students. As a result my daughter is bored to death (5th grade).

Fortunately, I work for another public school district that is fairly rich and offers 3 computer labs (33 computers each), planetarium, organic/community garden, butterfly garden (dedicated to breeding and releasing endangered butterfly species into the wild), rock climbing and fencing (part of Phys Ed), ASL Club, and includes Deaf students from a 50 mile radius (approx 40 students or so). So we're transferring my daughter here next year.

I totally agree with you Reba, it the same thing here at my children's school and I would like to see a big change in this also....

I also noticed that there are serveral children who is needs to improve their reading skills, and would think it would be wise enough to be able to have this sort of an afterschool class for them to improve their reading skills or whatever subject they may need to improved....

Also I noticed that elementary school doesn't have any type of sports for the children to join, only attending the YMCA, but I think it would be more helpful for them to join the activity sports for children who are in grade 3 to 5 th before they reach to middle school, that what most children would love to be involved....
 
I would like to see a new principal at my son's school because that principal is one lousy one. I loved the one they used to have a woman because, she never stood me up with interpreters when I needed one. But this Principal in school always lied to me about getting interpreter not once I had an interpreter this year. I am tired of him apologizing to me, I feel like he is too lazy to call and ask for one. There another parent who is deaf at my son's school that I've already met and she is also upset at the facts that the Principal didn't provide her an interpreter either. We didn't have one for the music concerts this year. :(
 
Have you talked to the school board of education about getting an interepreter for you?

Cheri, sounds like you have a valid reason to contact an ADA specialist in your area to work on this issue.

My daughters school never provide interpreters for me, not even at parent-teacher conferences because they claim that since the school is parochial, thus exempt from ADA.

They told me to talk to the Principal about it. They do not call for interpreter for you because they do not know every plans that the school has cuz they have 5 different schools to worry about not just one. This lady who is deaf that has a son that goes to my son's school, We are working on setting up a meeting with us and the Principal and have him require to get us an interpreter without being stood up. :fingersx:

I suggest that you bring an ADA specialist with you to the meeting so the principal cannot make excuses.

Oh wow, it must be so frustration for you to understand what is the parent/teacher conference. Especially if your daughters do perform on the stage. I could not afford to miss anything what my sons would say in their characters on the stage. High School aways provides an interpreter when my son's Deaf Mom show up. They make the arrangement to get an interpreter during my son's graduation Day because I did not want to miss anything.

Have you investiage about ADA section relation to parochial? They can't prevent to request an interpreter for you at your daughters's school.

I suggest you to get www on internet for www.nad.org and u look for the law center. You will find the fact law version about education. Print it out and show the school board which it will help them. If they refused, I recommend you to contact with your local advocacy center for the disabilties agency. Either you may contact with Deaf Association Club near your hometown available to assist your need. Good Lucky
