Doctors Say Baby Suffers From Rare Condition

WELLINGTON, Fla. -- A baby in Wellington, Fla., was born without eyes, West Palm Beach television station WPBF reported.

Doctors said Brielle Garrison suffers from a rare condition known as Anophthalmia.

"Anophthalmia is actually a condition where you have no ocular tissue at all, nothing in the eyes," said Dr. Lee Friedman, of the Microsurgical Institute.

Friedman said the cause of the condition is unknown.

"It's a sporadic mutation," Friedman said. "It's not hereditary."

Friedman said he hasn't seen anything like this in his 22 years of practice.

"For a baby to be born with no eyes is just so cruel, and because my daughter's 15, it was just mind boggling that such a thing could happen," said Lori Garrison, Brielle's grandmother.

The family said Brielle will have to have several surgeries so that her face does not become deformed.

"It's hard," said Taylor Garrison, Brielle's mother. "I mean, this week we have an appointment every day, and there's always appointments (and) different doctors."

The Garrisons hope by sharing their story more people will become aware and will hopefully conduct research to find the cause.

"I'm going to treat her like she was born just as any other baby, because that's how she is," said Taylor Garrison. "That's how I see her."

A fund for Brielle has been set up at a Wachovia Bank in Wellington.

So I guess that could mean she is blind?

As long as she could hear and speak when she gets older, then she would be fine since alot of blind people live just fine as the rest of us so...

This is very close to where I live. 10 miles. The baby will be blind and very soon will be having surgery to have glass eyes put in so she will not frightened people. The mother is choosing the right eyecolor. The baby is right now a very happy child and looks beautiful.
 
The mother is very pleased with her child and has said that she will do all she can to make sure she has a happy and fulfilled life. She has been in contact with the FSDB and they are sending her information for blind infants.

Glad to hear that. As long as she gets braille and cane skills, then it's not a sad story.

A lot of donations have already been made for this child and the family will do all they can. It is amazing how a community will pull together for people they don't know. there is alread over $10,000 in the account for this child's medical bills from outside supporters in just 3 days.
 
So that mean the mother is accepting her as a blind baby and would not change or fix on her except to have eye glasses. We were born that way, even if we are deaf, blind, and other disabilities. They have to accept who we are no matter if we had one disability or more disabilities. That is what make us unique. Normal people don't understand that at all and try to "fix" us to be like them. That is the problem that we have been fighting to let the hearing people know we are the one who have deafness or blind or any other disabilities. It has been going on for many, many years. :(

Mother and family are totally accepting her for herself. They are only getting the glass eyes so that as she gets older, she will not be taunted. Mother says, that if down the road the child doesn't want the glass eyes, then she will allow them to be removed. She just wants her child to be happy.

Thank you. That is the most important thing for her daughter to be a happy baby and later a happy girl when she get older. No one should force her, just like we are being forced to have deafness remove from us so that we are suppose to be like the hearing people. This is suppose to be natural and nothing a normal parent can do anything about us, except us be happy and we are capable of doing what we want to make our choices later in life, if we want to have surgery or not. We are proud to be Deaf :deaf:.

Awww.... you guys won't know what kind of gift the baby is goin' to be when she grows up. I've noticed some handicapped or deaf/blind children have their own wonderful gift - whether it's a small or big, no matter if she is deaf, or blind or what ever. She's still a blessed in the eyes of her parents. :aw:
 
With how far we've gotten with technology, I wouldn't be surprised if they developed implants for her when she's older.

I'm glad the mother have a positive outlook of her child.

as far as glasses, I can understand why the mother wanted to do this. my mother wanted us to hide our hearing aids because she was afraid we would be taunted. She was picked on because She had severe case of cross eyes. it just sad that we have to keep hiding ourselves just so we don't get teased in school.
 
So what if the baby born without eyes, I've been following one blog about girl that have chromosome abnormality born without eyes, microephaly (small head), mild hearing loss, possibile have mental retardation, but she look beautiful to me even without glass eyes, I don't care if baby born without eyes, ears, missing appendages like no fingers, missing arms, whatever they still can have great life.
Only disability I can't help but feel bad is someone in vegetative state or have mind of a infant can't eat, communicate, or anything just sit there stuck in body that doesn't work to express their feeling or what they want
